Ten Years Ago October 30, 2003 Four Waitsburg Cardinal cross country runners had per- sonal best performances at the pre-district meet in Colfax last Thursday. The Cardinals, for the first time in years, will field a team of five for the Distict meet, scheduled for Friday, Oct. 31 in Deer Park. The top five finishing teams qualify for state at Pasco. Cardinals Jimmy Crawford, Matt Baker, Ty- ler Berg and Marci Jo Lanning all topped their previous best times in the 5 k. run at Colfax. Crawford finished 7th with a 19.11 time; Baker 9th, 19.42;...

You've gotten your flu shot and stocked up on hand sanitizers but are you ready for a close encounter with household allergens? This time of year it's tough to tell whether sniffles stem from an allergy or a virus. Here are a few tips to help in dismissing the allergens in your home. Number one and most important is to lose the shoes at the door. Though most trees aren't producing pollen at this, point their fallen leaves are busy breeding mold. And once those spores get on your shoes, they travel inside the house with you. Next, boot fluffy...

One really nice thing about trying to understand the wheat market compared to bonds, stocks or other financial markets is the reality factor. Wheat is real stuff, made from sunshine, water, dirt and a lot of hard work. There is only a given amount of wheat produced and consumed in a year, with the same ancient variables at work; mostly weather, with a little influence from other markets thrown in, but the biggest variable, often even larger than weather, is government. In the last few weeks, we have had quite a show to watch in Washington,...

For readers who don't know, the column Wine & Country Living is several years old now. But did you know, I began covering our farming community and local winemakers ten years ago in a column titled, "The Val- ley Gourmet," published in Walla Walla's original lifestyle magazine, Foyer. If you remember, the Valley Gourmet column was similar to today's Wine & Country column covering everything from creature comforts, small family farming and regional winer- ies; always closing with an original recipe, a scrumptious food photo and a local wine...

There is no market of any stripe that is not watching events in Washington, D.C. with a kind of horrible fascination. It is like watching a horror film, knowing that the chainsaw killer is in the next room, and bad things are going to happen, while secretly relying on the author to rescue the heroine just in time. The problem is that there is no way to know if the script will kill her off and leave her boyfriend sobbing and alone at the end, or if both will prevail and ride off into the sunrise to- gether as the monster (apparently) dies in...

Ten Years Ago October 16, 2003 Kellyo and Rosie Gallaher of Huntsville were top in their divisions as the Northwest 2003 Old-timers Rodeo series galloped to a stop. Rosie Gallaher became the 2003 ladies barrel racing champion in the 50-59 age category. Kellyo was the All-Around Champion in the 40-49 age category. In calf roping he earned the fastest time of the year - 9 45, and lassoed his way to champion calf roper. He placed third in both breakaway roping and team roping. His part- ners during the season included Keith Crisher of Benton City,...

The regional harvest is coming to a close for 2013, which got me thinking: other than wheat and grapes, what other massively produced foods are harvested here on the eastern side of the state? This week I was invited out to the Ferrell Seed Farm, just outside Walla Walla, to see firsthand how the chickpea is pre- pared for perspective buyers from around the world. I came away from the visit knowing more about this popular locally grown legume and its internal properties. The chickpea - also known as a garbanzo bean, Bengal grain or cei ci bean...

The existence and validity of any actively traded market depends on the flow of decisions and actions of a very large number of people. Without this minute-by-minute flow of activity from thousands of speculators, hedgers, end- users, governments and investors each trading day, the market becomes weak, fragmented and much more easily dominated by a few large entities, especially when those entities enjoy their own very wide inside network of "real-world" informa- tion sources. An entity like, say, a multinational grain mer- chandiser, or maybe...

I n 1952, I was four years old and recall my father building a roaring fire in the fireplace and sitting back with this chromatic harmonica and playing polka after polka as I twirled around the living room like a whirling Dervish. This evening I built one of those roaring fires in the fire- place, the first of the season. And the only thing missing was dad ripping off a polka and the smell of Mom's apple pie bak- ing in the oven, which sets the tone for this column. Its fall pie time again! This is the season when the men and women of the...

Last week was a great week for wheat prices, even though no news had been the rule for most of the time since the first week of August. On Monday, the last trading day of September, USDA finally gave us something to look at. There's more old-crop corn on hand on farms and in grain elevators than traders expected, according to observers of the USDA-NASS Quarterly Grain Stocks report. In published pre-report surveys, the average analyst guess for on-hand inventories of corn in the US was 688 million bushels. USDA came out with 824 million....

Ten Years Ago October 2, 2003 A long-dormant rivalry will be rekindled Friday in Dayton when the Waitsburg Cardinals and the Dayton Bulldogs meet on the gridiron for the first time since 1995. The non-league contest follows a decisive 49-13 drubbing of Liberty-Spangle in Waitsburg last Friday. Defensively, it was Waitsburg's "best game of the year," said Coach Jeff Bartlow. Gabe Ke- ifel and Kurtis Reser each notched 11 tackles. Offensively, all three runningbacks - Kiefel, Brandon Cole and Henry Hubbard, had good games, he said. Brandon Cole...

My little nephews had a sleepover at my house this weekend. On Saturday, I took them to a library talk. The subject matter: simple ways we can help protect the earth and its natural resources. The 45 minute talk covered everything from putting a sweater on rather than turning up the heater, to how to get off catalog mailing lists to conserve paper waste. The cute thing is, the kids asked me to share with you readers some of the things we learned about conservation. So, here I go. Let's start with BYOW, which translates to bringing your own...

Just like trying to put a vehicle in gear and drive with the parking brake on, the wheat market is laboring way too hard in its attempt to clear a near-term objective to the upside. It is clear that the supply/demand for US wheat shows the tightest balance in the last five years, but that is not the factor it once was. Production of wheat outside of the US has increased steadily over the last decade, reducing the price impact of our "local" all-wheat production on global markets. That fact, along with a better-than-expected corn production...

When it comes to yard sales, I am known as a pro. If asked for advice it would be this: presentation is everything! Tossing objects into a heap only ensures viewers that everything is junk and commands junk prices. Display items with care and people will buy more. For instance, I have had a bag of old lace and linens stuffed behind my couch for years. Finally, for this year's sale, I washed, bleached, pressed and folded the materials and used no price tags for any of my items, leaving the bid open to the highest bidder. But the most important...

Chicago December wheat contracts continue to pound away at their life-of-contract lows. Over the entire his- tory of active trading from mid-September 2011, the December contract price reached highs of $9.13 per bushel in November 2012. Since that time 10 months ago, the trend has been lower, with the lowest point a couple of weeks ago at $6.35½. On Tuesday, the Chicago December finished the day session at $6.42, $2.71 below last fall's high. For most producers, that is a major shift in income po- tential. Even for a "small" farmer, that...

On the front of this week's paper I wrote about the upcoming Pioneer Fall Festival. While that story detailed the facts about what you can expect to find at this year's event, it didn't relay the heart of what the festival is really about, at least to me. And from my observations over the years, I'm pretty sure I'm not alone. While the focus is history, I think the Pioneer Fall Festival is really about community, friendship and coming together. We are blessed. As a teen growing up in a town t...

Last Thursday afternoon I was flipping some magnificent rib eyes on the grill when I looked up to see a massive wall - like an enormous tidal wave of black and brown cloud - bearing down on me. The surrounding trees were whipping around like drunken hula dancers as branches started snapping and leaves mixed with walnuts flew through the air. The power line behind the house bounced and crackled in time with the gale-force wind blasting the region. It was during dinner just a short while later as I sipped on an excellent Washington cabernet that...

This is a quick-draw down-and-dirty list with some easy pointers, because I get tired of chips and dip - usually by the second game of the season. So here are some easy options that offer up a little zip, zing and zest to your game time munchies menu. 1. White Bean and Roasted Garlic Stuff! Yes - this is awesome and beats the old refried beans with melted cheddar every time. The night before the game, get two heads of garlic, two cans of white beans, a red onion, a fresh bunch of Italian parsley and some crunchy rustic French bread. Put the...
