The Dayton community held a benefit concert for the Lorang Family last Sunday at the Liberty Theater. The family recently lost its oldest daughter, Hosanna Lorang. On June 27, the seven-year-old, fell about 20 feet from a tree and was rushed to a local hospital. Lorang later died in at Sacred Heart Children's Hospital in Spokane. The money raised at the concert will help the family pay medical bills and funeral costs. (Top) Jake Lorang, Hosanna's father, played with his band, Against The...

Because we've discussed pork here, one of my favorite pairings for everything except the hams and BBQ'd pork dishes is pi- not noir. This beautiful and aromatic red wine pairs well with the subtle flavors and textures of pork tenderloins, chops and shoulder roasts - the predominant cuts of the pig. First a short history of the queen of grapes: Pinot Noir has been grown in France - its homeland - for ap- proximately 2,000 years beginning prior to the Roman invasion of the Gaul's fiefdoms. The careful record-keeping of the monks who man- aged...

Welcome to my food column where anything goes. Here we'll explore the history of how we arrived where we are today through food and the ingredients that we commonly use and take for granted all the time. To understand where your food came from is akin to knowing where we came from and the common bond that the family farm and table provides. This installment explores the noble pig -- though it just scratches the surface. I sat down the other day with Eric Seo- ane of the Weinhard Café in Dayton, one of the best young chefs in the region, to...

  • The Harvest Life

Dan Groom, Special To The Times|Aug 9, 2012

This is the third year in a row that I've worked harvest with my cousin and uncle, David and Del White. I am a teacher by trade, so sum- mer break is a great time to make a few extra bucks doing harvest jobs. I drive wheat trucks. Because fewer and fewer people around these parts farm for a living anymore, I thought it a good idea to keep a journal of my days in the field so that the uninitiated might have a better understanding of the ups and downs of harvest life. Saturday, July 28 Harvest...

  • ‘Sister Band’ Gaining Notoriety

    Morgan Smith, The Times|Aug 9, 2012

DAYTON - Best friends Molly Weppler and Abby Chapman met in band class in elementary school and since then they have been inseparable in every aspect of life, including their venture into the Walla Walla music scene. They aren't sisters, but the 18-year old Dayton High School Alumnae still follow the sister-band model, sisters singing and playing instruments to- gether, and have recently been met with success. The women said they are influenced largely by bands in Walla Walla as well as wider...

  • Mother-Daughter Duo Equate Art With Love

    Morgan Smith, The Times|Aug 9, 2012

DAYTON - Art is love to mother-daughter watercolorists and Dayton natives Iola Bramhall and Jill Ingram. Bramhall, 92, was born in Dayton and started drawing when she was six years old. In the seventh grade she learned how to paint. She painted with oil paints and pastels for most of her life and her passion for art encouraged her daughter, Ingram, to fall in love with art as well. "I remember the first time I got into (painting with) orange and yellow," Ingram said. "I was making autumn c...

  • Rainbow Girls A Decades-Long Tradition

    Aug 2, 2012

WAITSBURG - If Karen Mohney's math is correct, the Rainbow Girls group has been active in Waitsburg for more than 75 years and about 680 to 700 Waitsburg girls have been part of the organization. Mohney, the current mother advisor of the Waitsburg group, is no stranger to Rainbow herself. And there are many other volunteers and board members who have also spent many years of their lives involved in the organization. The women, older and younger, say they stay with Rainbow because of the...

  • Historic Apparel Discovered

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Jul 19, 2012

WAITSBURG - When music teacher Rebecca Wilson was cleaning out some space in her closet she came across Waitsburg Marching Band uniforms that had been in retirement for nearly 30 years. Those red, cream and gold uniforms had been worn by hundreds of students from the 1950s through the mid- 1980s when the polyester and nylon formalwear was traded in for matching polo shirts. Part of the reason the band students no longer wear fancy uniforms is because marching bands aren't popular at small...

  • CROPS

    Gary Hofer, The Times|Jan 12, 2012

Wheat producers or owners please read with caution and especially not before bedtime. Wheat exports from the U.S. are lagging. Several familiar factors lead to this, including recent dollar strength against other currencies, adequate to abundant production from competing sources, and weak or confused demand among normally strong buyers. Exports are the key fundamental variable for wheat prices. This is especially true for white-wheat producers in the Pacific Northwest, as some 80 percent of the regional wheat crop is consumed overseas. The...

On behalf of myself and my family, I would like to thank everyone for the turnout at my benefit. I am so thankful for the support that we have been given. There are so many people I need to thank, I am so sorry if I leave someone out as I know a lot of people were involved. Special thanks are due the owners of the Last Resort and Lyons Ferry KOAs for the donation of the food items and their help in the kitchen. A rriving home from a weekend away isn't always so happy. I found my neighbor had lost her beloved "Pearl," The Coon Cat. As the week progressed, I'd hear Sally outside calling randomly for her kitty, her best friend, and it became unnerving, bringing back memories of when my kitty, Shoes The Creek Kitty, disappeared. In the country, you have to realize there are all sorts of predators out and about, and it just might be that the Barn Owl's coo isn't as friendly as we thought! People who don't have pets or know what it is like to lose your...

  • Wine & Country Living

    Judith Henderson, The Times|Sep 1, 2011

The small family farmers of our region are making way into Indian summer, preparing themselves for a good hefty second crop of corn, lettuces, early kale, pumpkins, beets and carrots. I was standing in the middle of Wild Bill's Patit Street Organic Farm today, admiring the rows of different leaf textures, deep burgundy lettuces, subtle green hues of sage, basil and floppy squash leafs. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a noisy blue jay landed on an adjacent fence post. I said to him, "hello, little dinosaur," and when I turned around to walk to the...

WAITSBURGThe lure of cotton candy and corn dogs will soon be in the air as local kids gear up for the Walla Walla County Fair & Frontier Days and the Columbia County Fair in early September. Waitsburg Corral Wranglers and FFA members began their quest for a shot at the Grand Champion title last spring at the Waitsburg Jr. Livestock Show. • Julie’s Junior Miss Legacy

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Aug 25, 2011

COLLEGE PLACE - It has been 43 years since 17-year-old Julie Stonecipher, a farmer's daughter from Waitsburg, won the Washington State American Junior Miss competition and was runner-up at the national American Junior Miss competition. The Touchet Valley held parades in her honor, signs bearing her name sat at the entrances to Waitsburg and she even received a key to the city of Walla Walla. After many years away from the largest and oldest national scholarship program for high school girls,...

  • Where East Meets West

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Aug 18, 2011

WAI T SBURG - Seattle-area residents who tuned into their local National Public Radio affiliate this week were introduced to none other than Waitsburg's Bret Moser, Jim German, Claire Johnston and Jack Millar. Seattle- based KUOW focused on Waitsburg in a second segment about the so-called "Cascade Curtain," a physical, and some would say cultural and political, divide between the west and east sides of the Cascade Mountains. In his show "Waitsburg: When East Meets West," reporter Dominic Black...

  • Take A Walk On The Wild Side

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Aug 18, 2011

WAITSBURG- Labor Day is just around the corner. With harvest still in full swing, many families may be skipping that usual weeklong vacation in search for a quick getaway to rejuvenate the soul before school and seeding begins. Right in our own back yard is a little piece of paradise that my best friend and I rediscovered while looking for a place to take a dip in the Touchet River. Our usual spot by the train trestle along Highway 12 near Huntsville was occupied that day, so we decided to take...
