Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
COLLEGE PLACE - In their first Southeast 2B league game of the season, the WP Cardinals escaped with a 62-56 victory over Walla Walla Valley Academy here Saturday night.
Chance Leroue and Owen Lanning both had big offensive games, scoring 17 points each. Lanning was nine-for-10 from the free throw line. Leroue added 10 ten rebounds, to secure a "double-double."
The Cardinals started off slow and trailed 14-6 at the end of the first quarter. However, they exploded for 28 points in the second quarter to take a 34-24 lead into halftime.
"Our guys did a good job getting WWVA players into foul trouble," Said WP coach Tavis Crittenden. "We knew we could draw fouls against them by driving the basket. Chance did a great job with that in the post."
For the game, WWVA committed 32 fouls, to WP's 21. WWVA's fouls put the Cardinals in a double-bonus situation early in both the second and fourth quarters.
On December 17, the Cards rolled to a 59-39 win over Mac-Hi at home. Lanning led all scorers with 16 points.
The Cardinals were scheduled to play in Asotin on Friday, but the game was cancelled due to freezing rain. The tournament scheduled for Waitsburg on December 30 was also cancelled, but the Cardinals will host Clarkston that evening.
