DRIVE HAMMERED, GET NAILED

WALLA WALLA - If you're having a good time and drinking more than a small glass of beer or wine, don't get behind the wheel. That's the general message that will save lives, but this summer law enforcement officials in the area are sending more than a message to prevent drinking-related accidents. Between Aug. 12 and Sept. 6 the traffic commission will launch its largest summer mobilization effort ever on Walla Walla and Asotin counties roadways as part of a statewide campaign in which 178 agencies are participating.

In the past, Labor Day weekend has been one of the state's deadliest holidays, averaging more than seven deaths per year. For additional information about the program of the Washington State Traffic Safety Commission, visit www.wtsc.wa.gov

Wozniak, an elementary school teacher for 27 years, will share her experiences as a teacher. The next opportunity to pray and plan future luncheons will be at Jo Ann Thatcher's home at 104 Front St. in Starbuck at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 28. APPROVES RIVER STUDY

DAYTON - Dayton City Councilors approved a contract Monday evening with GeoEngineers for $119,000 to perform a geomorphic assessment of the Touchet River watershed using LiDAR and aerial photos taken in April. The money comes from a grant secured with the help of staff at the Snake River Salmon Recovery Board. The assessment, which city councilors hope will be complete by March, is intended to help the city as well as members of the salmon board and the Columbia County Levee Roundtable determine projects that might help with fishrecovery and flood mitigation on the river.

Public meetings will occur before March so other stakeholders can be involved, according to city clerk Trina Cole.
