Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
ENTERPRISE - In their first away game of the season, the Bulldogs fell to the Enterprise Outlaws 34 - 0 last Thursday. Dayton came close to the end zone several times, thanks to big individual plays by such veterans as Colton Bickelhaupt and Dain Henderson, but each time a fumble or an interception cost them the opportunity to score.
"We just need to learn how to finish," head coach Dean Bickelhaupt said.
The long bus ride, Bickelhaupt said, also played a role in wearing down the team before they even got on the field. The Outlaws scored a touchdown on a the kickoff
return, then on an 80-yard run from the line of scrimmage to put Enterprise ahead 14 - 0 during the first quarter. "It was almost like they had jetlag," Bickelhaupt said about his players, who had to travel for several
hours to get to the field. "After that, we started playing some football." The Bulldogs settled down and began to move the ball downfield, including
quarterback Colton Bickelhaupt, who rushed for 93 yards with one run for 26 yards and one for 24 yards. The Bulldogs ran for 168 total yards and claimed 48 yards in the air, but they were unable to finish because they ran into the tougher Outlaws defense or fell victim to their own turnovers.
The Outlaws racked up a total of 278 yards on the ground and 73 in the air.
Bickelhaupt said Dayton already played better on Thursday than they did in their home opener, and he didn't seem too worried about turnovers going into the rest of the season. "Those are things we can fix," he said. Toward the end of the game, Henderson suffered a mild concussion from a run-in with an Outlaw. Although he is recovering well, he will have to sit out the next game against Athena Thursday. The good news is that Kroft Sunderland, who broke a bone in his hand recently, will be able to play in Dayton's next game with a cast. Mike Gatlin, a full back on offense and tackle on defense, also likely will be back on the team against Athena. "Sunderland's one of the best lineman, and he's back," Bickelhaupt said. The coach predicted Thursday's game in Oregon will be another tough one, but he's going to continue pursuing more options on offense and try out new pass plays during practice.
