WP Loses, But Barelyformidable

ASOTIN - WP became the second area team in a row to lose against the Asotin Panthers by two points Thursday. In a cliffhanger of a series of five games, the Cardinals lost the first two 19-25 and 31-33, won the second two 25-20 and 26-24, then lost the last 13-15.

"I was frustrated that we didn't win it, but happy about the way the girls played," head coach Jesse Buehler said. "It was our hardest-fought match. There was an urgency that hasn't been there in other games."

Game two in particular seemed to last an eternity. With no time outs remaining for either team, the coaches could only watch the intense back-and-forth.

"It was stressful as a coach," she said. "All I could do was sit back and watch them play." The Cardinals really stepped it up against the

and undefeated Asotin foes, who beat the same Bulldogs team that won against WP earlier in the season.

Buehler said her players did not hold back, treating every point as the most important of the game. WP is now 0-3 in league matches.

On Saturday, the Cardinals participated in the Weston-McEwen tournament

in Athena without some of its starters, yet got to the semifinal round after beating Helix. W-M barely beat the shorthanded Cardinals, and then claimed the title after beating Elgin. WP lost the first match against Pilot Rock 25 - 27, 16 - 25 and 16 - 25. It lost the second match against W-M 15 - 25, 19 - 25 and 16 - 25 before starting the loser out rounds. It won against Helix 25-23 and 25 - 23.

The match against the TigerScots was close: 11 - 25, 25 - 22 and 11 - 15. "We only had seven girls," Buehler said. "It was somewhat hard to compete without everyone there. We decided to have a good time and ended up playing better and surprising ourselves."

The Cardinals play DeSales on Thursday.
