You can lead your goats to water, but the stubborn animals won't cross until you build them a bridge. In late September, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation brought 1,700 goats to the Rainwater Wildlife Area, just outside Dayton above the South Fork Touchet River, to help with controlling equally stubborn yellow star thistle in the canyon. These four-legged hirelings didn't want to cross the stream until herders placed logs over the river as a make-shift bridge.
