Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
The Waitsburg-Prescott Tigers have a handful of league games left to play, but assistant coach Bart Baxter is already looking ahead to state. The first-year soccer team hit the ground running and hasn't stopped. The Tigers are going into the fifth week of the season undefeated. "No 2B team has ever gone to state undefeated in Washington," Baxter said. "We could set the bar in a lot of places this year. Some of these things have never been done before."
In a practice game at Milton Freewater's Mac-Hi on Tuesday, the Tigers beat these Oregon state champions 5-1. "We were kind-of hoping the kids would lose, or that the game would be real close, to help the team get its head out of the clouds," Baxter said. But the players still learned a lot about competing
against bigger, tougher schools, he said.
Knowing the score wouldn't affect their standing in the league, the Tigers began the game Tuesday with a relaxed attitude. But after the Pioneers kicked a goal, the WP athletes got down to business. Mac-Hi didn't score again, and the Tigers spent the second half playing hard. In league news, WP played two games Saturday in Spokane. The team knocked Northwest Christian out of its spot as 4th in the league with a 3-1 score in WP's favor. Goals were scored by Miguel Velazco, Jose Esquivel and Francisco Gonzales. Assisting were Lino Diaz, Jared Morris and Gonzales.
The Tigers play Northwest Christian again this Saturday at home in what will be the team's third "game of the week" in a row, Baxter said.
Also on Saturday, the Tigers defeated Northport High 6-0. Cesar Munguia made his first goal of the season. Other points were scored by Aldair Escalante, Omar Virgen and Lino Diaz. Aldair also assisted on three goals, while Munguia, Raul Contreras and Kevin Ortega assisted one each.
