When Gerald Pulliam gave Carol, his wife of more than 40 years, a choice between a home built underground or made of a cement dome, she reluctantly agreed to the dome. That was over four years ago. Just this summer the Dayton couple were able to move into their dome home, a giant bubble-like structure made of vinyl, foam and concrete. It's called a monolithic dome - monolith meaning made of a single great piece of stone. The frame and training for building the house, which now sits like a giant, overturned blue bowl on S. Touchet Road outside of Dayton, came from Italy, Texas, headquarters for the Monolithic Dome Institute. Saturday, Oct. 16, monolithic dome owners across the country will open their homes in a nation-wide open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. The Pulliams invite any and all to come inspect their new domicile. The tour is designed to raise awareness about these unusual buildings. Photo by Dian McClurg
