Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
The WP Tigers are 14-0 after beating the Bulldogs in Dayton on Tuesday. Assistant coach Bart Baxter said the team is trying to break another record by scoring 100 points in the season.
"We're just three points away, and we have two more games to go," he said Tuesday evening.
The Tigers defeated Dayton 11-0. Francisco Gonzales and Omar Virgen scored three goals, Lino Diaz scored four and JV player Alberto Sandoval scored his first goal of the season. Three assists were made by Kevin Ortega, four by Cesar Munguia, two by Miguel Velazco and one each by Francisco Gonzales and Aldair Escalante.
The Tigers gave Homecoming crowds in Prescott reason to cheer and holler Friday evening as they slayed St. George's Dragons and defended their title as league champs.
The Tigers beat the Spokane team for the second time this season. Friday's 3-1 score means WP is now the first-ever, first-year soccer team to have a 14-0 record this far into the season. The team is riding high in the rankings, keeping to within the top three in Washington as two other tough teams
in and out of the top three spots. This week WP sits at third in the state. "Every coach dreams of a season like this," said Tigers head coach Rick Hamilton. "I feel blessed to be able to start the program like this. We hope to have a 16-0 perfect season. That would be a feat." The odds are in the Tigers' favor. The only other team in the state right now with a matching record is LaConner, a west-coast team the Tigers won't face until state - just two games away. Miguel Velazco scored all three of the Homecoming points, but not without major support from his teammates. Both Omar Virgen and Cesar Mungia assisted. And the Tigers' defenders worked hard to keep the Dragons away from the net. "As a coach, I couldn't ask for a better group of kids," Hamilton said Friday night after the game. The Tigers continued their perfect season Monday with an 8-0 win over Walla Walla Valley Academy. WP's Lino Diaz scored four goals; Omar Virgen and Jose Esquivel two each. Virgen also assisted twice while Francisco Gonzalez, Diaz and Miguel Velazco had one assist each. The Tigers' next game is Saturday against Moses Lake Christian.
