Pullman - The Colfax Bulldogs have done what no other team was able to do this season. They beat the hard-fighting WP Cardinals 21-14 in a heart-breaking football game Monday night in Pullman.
"We gave Colfax a game, didn't we?" Cardinal Justin Armstrong told his teammates after the game was over, tears streaming down his face and those of others. A crowd of passionate WP fans attended the game despite the cold, snowy conditions.
Until the very end, the first half of the semi-final playoff game belonged to the Cardinals, who scored two touchdowns that went unanswered until Colfax made its first TD with seconds left on the clock.
But though the Cardinals shut down the Bulldogs' running game during the second half, the WP players were unable to stop Colfax's air campaign.
Colfax scored two more touchdowns to end the game at 21-14.
The most devastating blow to the Cardinals came when a 59-yard Zach Bartlow touchdown run was called back for a Cardinals penalty.
With this game, the first loss after an unprecedented winning streak for WP, the Cardinals placed third in the state.
"It was a great season for us," head coach Jeff Bartlow said. "The kids on our team, they're the best we've ever had up here."
