SKI BLUEWOOD OPENS
DAYTON - Ski Bluewood's first season under new ownership started on Friday and drew a steady crowd over the weekend.
With several feet of new snow since late last week, general manager Travis Stephenson said the new management was excited to kick off the 2010-2011 ski year in a year that promises lots of snowfall. As in years past, the mountain will be open 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. daily except on Mondays and Tuesdays. Ski Bluewood honors season passes purchased under former owners Stan and Nancy Goodell and offers a full complement of ski classes from beginning to advanced. NO FIFTH-GRADE SKI PROGRAM WAITSBURG - Waitsburg School District officials said the fifth-grade ski program was replaced this year by an ice skating program. Since the ski program under retired fifth-grade teacher Pam Conover always started its planning in the spring, there was not enough time this year to get in gear for its resumption under Ski Bluewood's new ownership. The future of the resort did not become certain until too late in the year, said Dr. Carol Clarke, the district's superintendent.
Fifth-grade parents had already committed to their children to the new skating outings, but Clarke said the door remains open to resuming the popular skiing program in 2011.
NEW PLAYERS SIGN WITH SWEETS WALLA WALLA - A pair of right-handed pitchers from the University of Nevade-Reno have signed with the Walla Walla Sweets for the 2011 season of West Coast League baseball. Jacob Overbay, an inaugural Sweet from a year ago, will be joined by Wolfpack teammate Tim Culligan. Overbay, a 6' 3" 190-pound junior from Chehalis, spent two seasons at Edmonds Coomunity College before transferring this year to Reno. In 2009, he went 1-1 with four saves and a 3.62 ERA in his freshman season at ECC and 0-1 with two saves and a 2.70 ERA last spring as a sophomore for the Tritons.
Culligan, also a junior transfer, is at Nevade-Reno after two successful seasons with Lower Columbia College. In 2009, as a freshman, the Liberty (Oregon) High School product went 7-1 with a 0.86 ERA. LCC won the West Region of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges
SUSPENSION RULING NEXT WEEK WAITSBURG - The result of a hearing that took almost eight hours last Wednesday are expected to be announced on Wednesday, Dec. 15, by the Waitsburg School District. The hearing was designed to determine whether the three WP volleyball coaches who were suspended before the end of the regular season were treated fairly in the "harassment, intimidation and bullying" investigation triggered by a complaint from one of the players' parents. Waitsburg School District Superintendent Dr. Carol Clarke presided over the hearing. The coaches were represented by Waitsburg-based attorney Mike Hubbard.
