Dayton graduate Garrett Bickelhaupt, 19, leaves this week for Army basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
Bickelhaupt, son of Dean and Sheri Bickelhaupt of Dayton, will attend boot camp for seven weeks before transferring to Fort Houston in San Antonio, Texas, for Army Medical Corps training. After four years in the field, Bickelhaupt hopes to try for the Special Forces.
Bickelhaupt lettered in football, basketball and baseball all four years of his high school career in Dayton prior to his 2009 graduation.
Garrett Bickelhaupt is the eldest of three children in the Bickelhaupt household. His younger brother, 16-year-old Colton, is a junior at Dayton. His sister, 15-year-old McKayla, is a sophomore. Both siblings are active in varsity sports.
Bickelhaupt's father, Dean, graduated from Dayton High School and is now head coach of the Bulldogs' football team.
Bickelhaupt's grandparents are Merle and Pearl Bickelhaupt, also of Dayton. Merle Bickelhaupt graduated from Dayton High School in the 1950s while Pearl graduated from high school in Waitsburg. Grandfather Robert Anderson lives in Spokane.
