Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
TOUCHET - Waitsburg Prescott's Lady Cardinals are staying on the ball with their fourth win in a row after defeating the Touchet Indians Tuesday night. The girls are now 6-0.
The Cardinals walked into the Indian's home court with their heads held high and left the same way. After a long game, the Lady Cardinals won 47-25.
"It was a good win," WP head coach Jerry Baker said. "The defense was a little sloppy due to lack of practice, but the girls put forth great effort."
Alyssa Hafen was one player Baker said played well Tuesday. And Genesis Pearson had "great rebounds," Baker said.
Hafen made seven points and Pearson made 10 points overall.
"Kristin Potter was great tonight," Baker said. "She handled the ball well and made some great steals that helped out a lot."
Despite the praise for his players, Baker had some criticism as well.
"We can't keep missing easy shots like we did tonight," Baker said. "We had a lot of foul troubles that we need to work on."
Baker knew the team would struggle after the Christmas break and fewer practices over the holidays.
Over Christmas vacation, WP played at the Helix Holiday Tournament in Helix, Ore., on Tuesday, Dec. 28. There the WP girls defeated Klickitat 60- 37.
Pearson and Megan Withers were leading scorers in the tournament with 12 points each. Dionna Baker came right behind with 11points, and Ronnie Hulce came in with 10.
"The whole team played well," Baker said. "I was impressed."
Bad weather and hazardous road conditions closed the tournament one day early. The girls would have played North Powder on Wednesday. This nonleague game may be rescheduled later in the season.
The girls play again Friday, Jan. 7, against Asotin at home. Baker said the Panthers will be a challenge for his team.
