PENDLETON - The National Weather Service has issued a small stream flood warning this week for those residents living along creeks and streams in the Blue Mountain foothills.
A warm, moist weather system will be moving through the region Wednesday night and Thursday with high snow levels and significant rain, according to the Pendleton weather service office.
At the time the warning was issued on Tuesday afternoon, no flooding was expected on the larger rivers, but smaller creeks and streams will likely see rapid rises and "bank-full" conditions.
People living next to creeks and streams along the Blue Mountains should be prepared for rising water levels.
Snow levels are expected to rise to near 4,000 feet Wednesday night (base elevation at Ski Bluewood is 4,545 feet) and continue to rise to near 5,000 feet on Thursday.
Precipitation of onehalf to three-quarters of an inch are expected over the Northern Blue Mountains Wednesday night with an additional half inch possible on Thursday. And temperatures Wednesday night are expected to be in the lower 30s. (Also see Weather forecast on page 12).
This combination of rain and snowmelt will cause significant runoff, according to the weather service announcement.
Further announcements will be available on the NOAA website: www.wrh. noaa.gov/pdt/.
