Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
WALLA WALLA - The Waitsburg-Prescott Cardinals and DeSales went head to head in a tough league game Saturday in Walla Walla. When it was all said and done, the Cardinals came out on top with a close win of 62-51. WP now stands 4-0 in 2B League boys' basketball action.
"In the first half of the game we were a little stagnant on the offensive side, but we played a very solid first half defensively," said head coach T.J. Scott. The Cards were able to create an eight-point lead by disrupting the Irish offensive flow.
In the third quarter Scott tried something a little different. "We worked on our zone defense," Scott said. "It was just a disaster. They did anything they wanted, and we didn't adjust to a hot player."
Kris Cady came onto the court ready to charge the Irish. He forced five turnovers and made 17 points.
"Cady was every where, and brought a little offensive game," Scott said. "He was electric and sparked the fourth quarter comeback."
It was the best game of his career, Baker said.
In the last quarter of the game, WP got things together and played a "very solid quarter against a very solid team," Scott said. "The kids pressured them into turnovers on defense, and we got back into the offensive game."
On Saturday WP traveled to TCP for another game. WP boys came out on top again, 43-22.
"We played a great man defense the whole game," Scott said. "Anytime you can hold a team under forty points, you're getting it done on the defense end, and we held them to 22."
There were a few things that could have been better, Scott said.
"We had way too many turnovers, and they (the boys) struggled with spacing and shot selection. But some things just went great. I was thrilled with efforts on the defense end, even though we never really got into the flow of offensive against their 2/3 zone."
The team played hard and managed to do better offensively in the second half, Scott said.
This weekend WP will play a challenging game against Liberty Christian at home. Then Saturday, the teams will travel to the Bulldogs' home court in Dayton.
"We look forward to two tough games coming up this weekend." Scott said.
