Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
DAYTON - The Bulldogs are chomping at the bit. Cold, soggy weather has kept the Dayton baseball and softball teams indoors for most of the season so far.
Both teams had planned to play double-headers against Pomeroy on Tuesday, but those matches had to be rescheduled because of the rain.
The Lady Bulldogs played one, non-league game against Walla Walla High School's JV team last Thursday, neatly beating the Blue Devils 5-3.
"Kayla Turner played a pretty good game pitching," said assistant coach Desirae Jones. "And we got hits when we needed them."
Shelby Smith had three for three with a homerun. Samantha Harting and Miwa Umeda each had a triple, while Nicole Lambert was two for three with a double. Umeda, a Brazilian foreign exchange student, played catcher for the team on Thursday.
"We've still been inside a lot," Jones said. "Hopefully we'll get to play some games this week."
For head baseball coach Sal Benavides, the frustration is just as high. His boys haven't had a match for over a week.
"Practices have been really good, although cold and miserable, but the kids are eager to get out there," he said Tuesday.
Both teams play doubleheaders on Saturday in Asotin at 11 a.m. in their first two league games of the season.
The Tri-Cities Prep baseball game cancelled on Saturday has been rescheduled for April 12 in Pasco. The softball game against TCP will take place in Dayton on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. - if it doesn't get rained out.
Both teams were tentatively slated to try again for double-headers in Pomeroy on Wednesday.
