Lady Bulldogs Win Doubleheader

DAYTON - The Dayton Bulldogs softball team went 5-0 Thursday after defeating a young Tri Cities Prep team in a windy doubleheader at home.

The Lady Bulldogs beat the Jaguars 10-0 in the first and 10-0 in the second game, allowing only two hits in each of the two games.

"We got to hit the ball today," Dayton assistant coach Desirae Jones said. "Some of our pitchers got some more experience in the circle and we are improving our mental game."

The pitchers included Colleen Delp, who started the game and was relieved by McKayla Bickelhaupt in the first game's fifth inning.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the first inning, then logged five points in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth.

In the second game, the Bulldogs' biggest inning was the fourth with four runs. They scored two in the first, one each in the second and third and two in the fifth.

Claire Lyman opened the second game through the third inning, making way for Samantha Harting in the fourth and fifth. Again, the girls held the Jaguars scoreless.

" We've been working on the mental game - to be prepared for the unexpected," said Jones, who noted the Lady Bulldogs had several successful double plays during the game.

"We had only a few errors, but we need to work on base running," she said.

Perhaps TCP was as big a test for the Bulldogs as other league opponents will be. The Jaguars are a very young team behind pitcher Victoria Nunez.

Overall, Jones said the 2011 team is having fun.

"They're doing good," she said. "It's nice to have a team that gets along so well."

The Saturday doubleheader against Asotin was cancelled because of bad weather. The team's next game is a doubleheader against DeSales in Walla Walla on Saturday, April 16 at 11 a.m.
