Josh Wood and Clint Reser won hottest chili cooks for a second year in a row in the Third Annual Waitsburg "One of a Kind" Chili Cook-Off. Second place winner was Two Bobs Chili by Bob Patton and Bob Danforth; third place was Bolles Junction "Stop a Freight Train" chili by Bob Lee, Dave McConnell and Jack McCaw, and Honorable mention went to Charlie Burrington and Jake Long.
In an attempt to deter anhydrous ammonia thieves, Mc- Gregor Company is the first area farm chemical company to use valve locks for fertilizer rigs.
Twenty-Five Years Ago June 5, 1986
The Walla Walla "59ers" will be re-enacting the 1862 mail run from Lapwai, Idaho to Walla Walla on June 12, 13 and 14. The stage will stop in Waitsburg June 14 for about an hour as the drivers will have breakfast and switch teams. There's some speculation the Jasper Mountain Gang is planning a stage holdup near Preston Park.
Margaret Hagerman placed third in the state in the 800-meter run to highlight an otherwise dismal showing by the Prescott-Waitsburg Vandals track team at the State "B" meeting in Wenatchee last weekend.
Fifty Years Ago June 9, 1961
Glynn Davis, a native of Bridgeport, Wash., has been hired by the school district as the new seventh grade teacher and grade school coach.
The annual DeNova Club potluck picnic was held on the lawn of the Jim Hansen home with Mrs. Don Thomas as co-hostess. Mrs. Denney Neace won the door prize.
Donna Thomas is leaving Saturday to enroll in the Mary Stone Beauty School in Seattle. She was the recipient of a $300 scholarship offered by the school.
Seventy-Five Years Ago June 12, 1936
The beautiful quilt top made and sold by the 4H Club members was given to Happy Cline who held the winning number 111.
There is scheduled for Sunday, June 14, at Lewis and Clark Trail State Park between this city and Dayton, a grand reunion of thirteen Townsend Clubs of this district.
The Dorcas Society drove out to the country home of Mrs. Laura McCown on Wednesday afternoon and were guests of Miss Hazel McCown assisted by Mrs. Charles Gilmore and Mrs. Ted Bachmann.
One Hundred Years Ago June 9, 1911
Harlan Mills is back on the Keiser farm. He and Otis Denney have a long harvest run, they having purchased the Bunting crop.
A.M. McCoy and children , Elizabeth and Wayne, accompanied by W.G. Preston, left Saturday for Chehalis where Mr. McCoy left the two children with their grandparents to spend the vacation. Mrs. McCoy and Mrs. Preston returned home by way of Portland where they took in some of the Rose Carnival.
W.H. Wild, formerly in the blacksmith business in this city, was in town Saturday from Lowden Station, this county.
One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago June 4, 1886
Walter Woods had a $30 saddle stolen from his barn on Smith Hollow a few nights since.
At last Waitsburg is to have its principal streets sprinkled. The necessary funds have been subscribed and the "long felt want" will probably be in operation by next Monday.
Ad Fudge has sold his entire crop of wool, 69,000 pounds, for 13 ½ cents -sacks furnished. Mr. F. says that is the best price realized for three years.
Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Powell gave a farewell party in honor of Miss Lucretta Armstrong who left for her home in Corvallis.
The Christian Church was filled to its utmost capacity last Friday afternoon with persons anxious to hear the closing exercises of the school. The pupils all acquitted themselves in a highly creditable manner.
