Long-time Waitsburg Lion J.W. "Buffalo Bill" Thompson was presented with "Lion of the Year" honors at the local civic group's final meeting.
Dr. S.R. Hevel brought a clipping into The Times Monday, taken from the Eastern Oregonian. The local firefighters will appreciate it. The tournament of the firemen in Heppner has been a decided success. Attendance has been good and all conditions contributing for the most part to the enjoyment of all. A sensation was caused by the Waitsburg team, that lowered the association record in the Speed race. It was the fastest time that has ever been registered. Waitsburg winning in 22.45 seconds.
Twenty-Five Years Ago June 19, 1986
The 59ers stagecoach arrived in town Saturday only to be held up by the Jasper Mountain Gang. The Walla Walla Sheriff's posse came to the rescue, however, and Judge Bob Miller hastened to call a jury and appoint an attorney for the defense. A fast trial followed with eight death penalty votes from the six jurors. All the suspicious-looking characters were seen around town later in the week.
The city of Waitsburg took delivery of a new garbage truck this week from Teague Motors in Walla Walla.
Fifty Years Ago June 23, 1961
Mrs. Bob Pollard entertained a family dinner Sunday in celebration of Father's Day and Mrs. Lewis Patton's birthday. There were four generations of Pollards present: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pollard, Mrs. Lewis Patton, Robert Patton and children, Brad and Kim.
Rainbow Grands Assembly was held in Pasco this past week. Fifteen girls and four adults attended. Celia Gibson was a grand officer as representative of North Carolina. Joy Broom was a member of the Grand Choir.
Seventy-Five Years Ago June 26, 1936
The A.T.E. Club met Thursday evening at the home of Mrs. Charles Zuger as hostess. Five tables of bridge were in play with Mrs. Sereta Sayers and Mrs. Donald Harris winning high scores. Refreshments were served at small tables centered with spring flowers.
Mr. and Mrs. George Bateman left Tuesday to attend the 42nd annual Rinehart reunion which is being held at Salt Water Park several miles west of Kent, Wash. They left in a V-8 Ford truck with 17 others from Dayton and Walla Walla, and expect to have a real vacation and will return Friday.
One Hundred Years Ago June 23, 1911
On his place east of town, J.N. Taggard has planted 21,000 apple grafts and 1,800 pear grafts. A fair percentage of these are growing nicely and will be in fine condition for orchard planting late this fall or next spring.
J.M. Chew who is engaged in erecting a new barn on his lot on Main Street recently purchased by J.M. Bruce brought to this office a few days ago a sprout from a large elderberry bush which measured 11 ft. and was cut in the Bruce lot. This is sure "some growth" for this early in the season.
Born - In this city on Sunday, June 11th to Mr. and Mrs. O.V. Langdon, a daughter. Mother and child doing nicely.
One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago June 18, 1886
It is estimated that the number of people on the Christian campgrounds, this city, last Sunday was 400, at Shiloh, 600. The numbers will doubtless be much larger next Sunday.
D.W. Kaup and T.H. Jessup were wading the Touchet last Saturday in search of periwinkles for Grover Cleveland, that he might go trout fishing.
