Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
YAKIMA- Waitsburg- Prescott graduate Kris Cady got the opportunity of a lifetime when he played in the Washington State Football Coaches Association East-West all star game in Yakima this weekend.
The West won the game 23-14.
The Earl Barden Classic was played at Zaepfel Stadium and consisted of some of the best football players in the 1A, 1B and 2A divisions in the State of Washington. The players were selected by the coaches association.
The West jumped out to a 13-0 lead on a couple of touchdown plays; a pass play for 22 yards and another pass play for 10 yards with just minutes left to play in the half. The lead was 13-0 at the intermission.
In the second half, the East rallied. They scored on a 37-yard touchdown pass and a 3-yard run to grab the lead from the West 14-13 with a little more than 7 minutes left in the game.
The West responded quickly. Two big passes moved the West into East territory and into field goal position. A 26-yard field goal with just over 3 minutes remaining gave the West the lead back at 16-14.
After a defensive stand, the West got the ball back. On a fourth down play the team pulled off what many would call a fluke play for 19 yards and another touchdown. With the extra point the West was ahead 23-14 and the score ended that way.
Cady was the deep guy on all the kickoffs. He returned two kicks that probably netted 25 yards. On offense, Cady carried the ball five times for about 20 yards. One carry was 8 yards, another carry for six yards.
Cady was involved in a number of running and pass plays and played most of the game.
Although he did not play much corner at Waitsburg- Prescott, he entered the game and played a tough defense most of the day. Interestingly, he got to play with Tri-Cities Prep all-star cornerback Troy Redman, one of the best in the state.
When you can come in and play corner against the best players in the state that says a lot about what kind of athlete you are.
Cady had a great time playing and meeting the best players in the state.
Cady said the highlight for the entire week was the time in the dorms, eating as a team and the game too.
"It was just a great experience that I will never forget," Cady said.
Cady has not decided what his next move will be in college. He has had some interested junior college coaches but nothing local.
He appreciated the time as a Waitsburg-Prescott Cardinal and all four years of football.
"I will miss it big time," he said.
