Lady Cards Fall To Asotin

ASOTIN -- The WP Lady Cardinals lost a league match in three games to the towering Asotin Panthers last Thursday night.

The Cardinals started off on the right foot scoring first but the Panthers 5'11" senior JaLisa Jose answered with a screaming kill and didn't stop all night.

A missed attack attempt from the Cardinals and an Asotin serving ace gave the Panthers a 3-1 lead. But the Panthers would miss its next serve and WP's Dionna Baker and Rhiannon Chapman would contribute back-toback kills for a 5-4 WP lead.

The first game continued to be a point-for-point match. Asotin blocked a tip attempt to tie it at 5 all, but a backrow attack from Krystal Harris would give the Cardinals the lead.

A dropped ball on the Cardinals' side with an Asotin serving ace put Asotin up by one, but the Panthers would miss its next attack to give the Cardinals the side out and tie the game at 7.

With a combination of serving aces and kills from Jose, the Panthers pulled away with a 20-10 lead. But Baker and Chapman teamed up again for a pair of kills to spark some Cardinal offense and pull within five.

Asotin would be called for a double hit twice. Combined with a WP Baker tip, two Chapman serving aces, and a block that fell on Asotin's side the birds tied it all up at 21.

The Cardinals would score just one more point before the Panthers took the first game with serving aces with a score of 25-22.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 13-6 lead in game two, but were soon battling point for point when Asotin racked up three kills, two serving aces, and two blocks.

The Cardinals couldn't hold on to finish and Asotin ended the game with two kills from their 5'11' seniors to take the second game, 26-24.

Asotin jumped to a 6-0 lead in game three and the Cardinals never recovered. The volleys were long, but dissatisfying, and the Cardinals fell to the Panthers, 25-19.

The WP Cardinals also competed in an eight-team pool play tournament in Athena last Saturday.

The Cards opened the day with a victory over Pilot Rock in two games. Hulce, Baker, and Krystal Harris had 4 kills each, while Harris also had 4 digs and 5 aces.

They moved on to dominate Helix, 25-19 and 25-9, with Hulce leading the way with 9 kills and Chelsey Brannock stepping up with 5 assists and 6 serving aces.

The Cardinals face Mac- Hi Wednesday in Waitsburg at 6 p.m., and Desales on Thursday in Waitsburg also at 6 p.m.
