Ten Years Ago November 18, 2001

America's Broadway musical "The Music Man" inaugurates the grand re-opening of the Dayton's renovated Liberty Theater next week. Many locals volunteered their time and talents to make this a success.

Waitsburg City Council unanimously approved Paragon Construction's $2.48 million bid as the general contractor for the City's Wastewater Treatment Facility.

Twenty-Five Years Ago November 13, 1986

Waitsburg Lions Tuesday heard a talk from Marne Lytle on her planned summer trip to New Zealand and Australia as a member of a basketball team representing Waitsburg and the United States.

Administrators, coaches and board representatives from Prescott and Waitsburg met last Monday to go over the results of two community polls taken in regards to the future of the sports co-op programs between the two schools.

Rev. Les Hyder of the First Presbyterian Church of Waitsburg has accepted a full-time position as chaplain in the U.S. Air Force.

Fifty Years Ago November 17, 1961

At the annual FFA Harvest Ball held at Wait-Hi Friday evening. Nancee Clodius was crowned "Sweetheart of FFA" by popular vote. Her attendants were Wanda Nettles and Judy Duckworth.

Straight-A students at W.H.S. this quarter were Sue Lawrence, Jim Wood and Vickie Gohlman. Others on the honor roll were Garry Katsel, Margie Daniel, Lynn Mantz, Juanita Augustine, Joy Broom, Jack Cyr, Freda Kay Harris, We Leid, Cathy McCown, Mike Vennum, Dan Aylward, Jeff Broom, Tom Land, Sharon Anderson, Susan Hawks, Karen Peters, Kathy Mantz and Janice Bloor.

We do not know whether all this apprehension over a possible bomb drop is responsible in any manner, but gross liquor sales in the state amounted to almost $7,700,000 last month, an increase of 7.4 per cent over September 1960. In August they amounted to $7,805,503 which was 6.58 percent above August 1960. So in spite of higher taxes on drinking liquor, it would not appear that consumers are smuggling in too much from Oregon, as has been feared."

Seventy-Five Years Ago November 20, 1936

The Atkinson Feed & Fuel Co building at the corner of Preston and Coppei Avenues was practically destroyed by fire about 5:30 Tuesday evening.

Billy Vollmer, younger son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Vollmer, was recently elected as a representative to the national convention of Alpha Zeta, agricultural honorary. He is a junior at W.S.C.

George Bateman says that he is going to serve a turkey dinner with all the trimmings at his restaurant on Thanksgiving Day.

One Hundred Years Ago November 17, 1911

A number of ladies of the United Artisans and the Women of Woodcraft Circle drove out to the new home of Mr. and Mrs. James Kinder last Friday and spent the day with Mrs. Kinder.

There will be a Basket Social at the Segraves Hall, Jasper Mountain Saturday night, Dec. 2. The ladies are requested to bring baskets and the general public is cordially invited to attend.

Born Saturday, November 11 to Mr. and Mrs. William Hawks, a son.

The first snow of the season fell here last Thursday, the round being fairly covered. A warm rain Sunday and Monday effectually thawed the ground.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago November 12, 1886

The city and county saloon license taken out by H.M. Wood expired last Tuesday. Application was made for a renewal of the county license, but the commissioners refused to grant it, because on June 28 the voters of this precinct voted "for local option." The county commissioners have adopted a rule to issue no county license in precincts where local option carried at the June election. Therefore it is safe to guess that Waitsburg's saloon is permanently closed.

Spokane Falls gained the county seat over Cheney at the recent election by a majority of more than two to one.

Frank Parton had a runaway and turned over last Sunday, but fortunately escaped without damage to self, horse or buggy. Washington Seminary (Huntsville) is running with a full head of power. The school is full, and many more are expected for the winter term.
