Ten Years Ago November 27, 2001

As we observe Thanksgiving Day, Waitsburg's turkeys are featured in a Say Cheese profile. They have their favorite haunts around town, traveling in a flock that is well-known as a traffic-stopper.

Highlights of the Dayton Holiday Kickoff this weekend include: winter fireworks and the first live performance in the newly restored Liberty Theater. Live performances of "The Music Man" will be held throughout the weekend. Waitsburg's greeting the holiday season will be held on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001.

Owners Mike and Dan McClure announced Monday that after 14 years, Tumac Machinery will be closing the John Deere store in Dayton. Plans are for Tumac to continue to operate its Gleaner Parts Store out of Dayton and serve their Columbia County John Deere customers out of their Walla Walla store.

Twenty-Five Years Ago November 20, 1986

Carrie Stonecipher, daughter of Bill and Linda Stonecipher, has received the American Farmer degree, the highest award by the national organization of Future Farmers of America. She received the degree in Kansas City, Mo.

The Shop-at-Home promotion will start the day after Thanksgiving, according to Loyal Baker. Berger Chase said the Community Christmas party will be Dec. 19. He said a call has gone out for a piano player or some musician of some type to provide entertainment.

Fifty Years Ago November 24, 1961

Bob Settle, who has been with the Merchant Marines for the past 10 years, is in Waitsburg for the holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Tuttle, spoke at Commercial Club Tuesday night relating some of his experiences at sea.

Several Camp Fire leaders, with Mrs. Dick Harper wielding the No. 1 brush, met at the City Hall last week and started painting the two upstairs rooms, which are used by the Camp Fire Girls. At present, two groups are using the rooms.

Mrs. Lloyd Perry showed colored pictures of the Cardinal football team boat the Nov. 16 meeting of DeNova Club, Mr. Perry had taken the pictures.

Seventy-Five Years Ago November 27, 1936

Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Brown of near this city, pioneer residents of this district, were pleasantly surprised by their children and families last Thursday, Nov. 19, on the occasion of their 60th wedding anniversary.

The big community party and dance about the middle of December promises to be a very enjoyable affair from the present outline of the program contemplated.

Walt Zuger, of the W.S.C. football squad, spent Tuesday of last week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Zuger, on his way back to Pullman from the Los Angeles trip.

One Hundred Years Ago November 24, 1911

Mr. L.D. Wheatley of Walla Walla has purchased the City Pressery, formerly owned by Ed Butler, and has assumed possession. Ed Butler has gone to Portland where he has accepted a position with Inland Cracker Co .

Waitsburg again has a band and from all indications within a few weeks will have a very presentable organization. Harry Buroker was named manager and Earl Butler, secretary-treasurer.

Fran Jonas has the gravel on the ground for a new cement walk in front of the residence he recently purchased on Fourth Street.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago November 19, 1886

Wild geese are so numerous on Eureka Flat that they are a nuisance, doing much damage to the wheat fields.

R.E. Maxwell, Sr. and R.E. Maxwell, Jr. have established a broom factory on the latter's ranch 12 miles northeast of this city. We hope they will make a success of their enterprise, for they are deserving gentlemen.

Oscar Saling and Miss Laughery were united in the holy bonds of matrimony last Saturday night.

The new U.P. Church in this city was formally dedicated last Sunday. Rev. Dr. Owens from Stuebenville, Ohio, preaching the dedication sermon. The building is entirely free from debt, and has a bell fund of $75. The collection last Sunday amounted to $40.
