The Community Cantata "The Winter Rose," accompanied by Randy Pearson and directed by Melissa Ferrians, is sure to be an enlightening event this Sunday.
Genny Menino, one of the 10 members of Waitsburg's FFA Trap Team is featured. The chapter placed fourth and sixth out of 11 teams in its first trap meet last Saturday.
Twenty-Five Years Ago December 11, 1986
Two Waitsburg high school seniors have been honored by the Exchange Club of Walla Walla in the Youths of the Month honors for November. Honorees are Judy Helm, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Helm, and Troy Larsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Larsen.
Winners in the Hometown Christmas shopping spree drawing were Jeanne Lincoln, $50, Michelle Long, $100 and Don Thomas, $50.
Barbara Danforth of Waitsburg is a member of the Walla Walla, Community College Foundation and dropped by a list of goals for the group, which has pledged to give help and assistance to the local community college.
Fifty Years Ago December 15, 1961
Sorotus Club was entertained at a buffet supper and Christmas paret Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. Jake Smith.
The lobby of the Post Office has taken on a festive appearance with the addition of a Christmas tree, fully decorated and lights, which were donated for the holiday pleasure of the public by the third grade Bluebird's Twinkle Toes.
The Art Danielson ranch, one half mile east of Waitsburg, will be the scene of the first annual production sale of registered polled Herefords on Monday, Dec. 18.
T. Harvey Estes will be the new manager of the National Bank of Commerce in Waitsburg. Robert E. Butler is transferring to Dayton as manager of the bank's office there.
Seventy-Five Years Ago December 18, 1936
Dollar wheat became a reality in Waitsburg this week for the first time since early 1930. After touching a figure of $1.01, F.O.B. sacked closing quotations dropped off to an even dollar a bushel.
The farewell speech of ex-king Edward VIII was heard by the entire student body of the high school and grade schools in the high school auditorium. The arrangement of this radio lesson was the quick realization of Superintendant A.T. Sutton for the students to hear of a great change in history taking place. Hamilton's Electric loaned and installed a Philco radio by a fast-working crew.
One Hundred Years Ago December 22, 1911
Gov. M.E. Hay, Warden C.S. Reed, Senator D.H. Cox and Jay Williams made up the distinguished party, which spent Monday in this city. They were the guests of Hon. Gustav Vollmer at Rose Glen farm at noon.
Bruce Abbey and wife arrived home Monday after an absence of two years. During much of this time they have been with a theatrical company touring the south.
Herman N. Austin and Miss Edna Summers, both of Attilia, were granted a marriage license last week. Miss Summers is a daughter of Blanche Summers and was a resident of this city for a number of years.
One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago December 10, 1886
Is it possible that the city laws of Waitsburg do not make it the duty of the city marshal to arrest a man who in a passion draws his pistol and fires promiscuously on our principal street? If so, for heaven's sake, let them be remedied at once. That scene last Saturday was a disgrace alike to the perpetrator and our city. Let's have no more such work.
The people of Coppei met at their school on the evening of the 25th of November in the interest of education. A.W. Phillips presided Rev. W.G. Hays opened the exercises of the evening by a short address on the public school system. He was followed by J.N. Taggard, teacher who spoke on the relations of parents, pupils and teacher. After which tables were soon placed in position and most bounteous Thanksgiving supper was spread. A most pleasant and enjoyable evening was spent both in a literary and social way.
