Bulldogs Keelhaul Pomeroy Pirates

DAYTON -- In their second victory over Pomeroy Tuesday night, the Bulldogs quickly forced the Pirates to walk the plank, and then danced circles around them as they plunged the frigid waters surrounding the ship.

Dayton keelhauled their younger neighbors to the East, 82-38, with the 40-point spread prompting the mercy rule that lets the game clock run continuously in the fourth quarter until it runs out and ends the game.

The Bulldogs are now 4- 0, hosting Waitsburg- Prescott on Friday and Asotin on Saturday.

" It was a good game for us," head coach Roy Ramirez said. "I thought they (Bulldogs) did extremely well."

No one could quite remember if the game added up to a record for Garett Turner, but his 33 points, including several treys, must have been close, announcer, statistics keeper and dad Jeff Turner said.

Where Turner took his shots mostly from the field, runner-up Kroft Sunderland's 15 points came from persistent rebounds and lay-ups.

Hayden Fullerton excelled in turnovers, stealing the Pirates' booty several times and running it back for coast-to-coast lay-ups and, occasionally, extra fouls.

The Bulldogs, a team made up of six seniors compared to Pomeroy's two, is far more experienced, Ramirez said.

That seasoned chemistry among the players made the game a joy to watch thanks to quick passing, clever routing and numerous breakaways invariably leading to accurate scores.

"They're young," Ramirez said about the Pirates. "But we took our lumps when we were sophomores. They'll be extremely tough in the years to come."

Ramirez complimented his team on defense, which he said won the game. Rebounding, though with room for improvement, is nonetheless heading in the right direction, Ramirez said.

The Bulldogs' runaway victory began in the first quarter, which ended 21-8 in their favor and saw Turner score just before the buzzer.

The first period set the pace with Dayton adding another 11 points to their lead, making it 42-17 by the half.

By the third quarter, the margin had reached 40 points (68-28), thus prompting the mercy rule before the final score reached 82-38, a 44-point spread.
