Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
WAITSBURG -- The WP Lady Cardinals scored 20 firstquarter points on their way to defeating the Powder Valley Badgers, 54-40, last Saturday night at Kison Court.
The Lady Cards wasted no time setting the pace of the game. With 4:24 left in the first quarter, Hailey Goenen stole a Badger dish out from under the basket and banked it in for two points.
The Cardinals put on the full-court pressure and Ronnie Hulce swiped the ball and found Krystal Harris for the fast break lay-up. Hulce then added two more with a short jumper and the Cards led 14-6 with 2:07 left in the first.
Harris threw up a shot for three points before Katy Hofer worked her way inside for two, and the Badgers had yet to answer. Kristin Potter's tenacious defense landed her one of her five steals of the night, but she only hit one free throw after being fouled on her fast break layup. Powder Valley answered with a field goal and the Cards ended the first quarter with a 20-8 lead. The Cardinals' second quarter scoring began when Potter pulled up a fast break to dump the ball to Taylor Deopker who banked it in jumper style. Scoring continued with a bucket from Hulce and again when Kayla Huxoll dished the fast break off to Harris for a 26- 12 Cardinal lead.
Powder Valley utilized a time out with 4:18 left in the half after Hulce drove the length of the court to add two more to the Cardinal board.
The Badgers put up four unanswered points, narrowing the Cardinals' halftime lead, 28-16.
Harris started things off for the Cards in the second half with a fast break lay-up followed by a steal from Cardinal Dionna Baker.
Baker drove the length of the court and took her opponent to the base line before dumping it off to Hulce for the bank shot.
Goenen's quick feet took her the length of the court for a fast break lay-up extending the Cardinals' lead to 40-17.
In hopes of breaking the Cardinals' momentum, Powder Valley took another timeout.
The Cardinals missed four straight shots, but Huxoll sparked some offense with a steal and a fast break lay-up.
The Badgers answered with a three-point shot and the Cardinals had a 47-30 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Both teams scored seven points each in the fourth quarter to give the Cardinals a 52-37 win.
