Ten Years Ago December 20, 2001

Inspired by the "Weston Shoetree," the Coffee Connection Café in Walla Walla, which opened in February, 2001, spread the Christmas spirit - collecting shoes to be donated to charity. Donators were treated to a cup of coffee for their contributions.

Christmas is in the air with the Waitsburg band's Christmas Concert last Thursday. Members of the Sixth Grade Band featured in this paper include Kevin Steffanson, Jessie Farnsworth, Kellen Gerke and Shawny Ingle. The concert was directed by Brad Green.

Featured in Say Cheese, a picture of new business owner Tom Baker standing in the basement of The Times with floodwater. The Times -along with other businesses and the rest of the town- was inundated by flooding from the Touchet River in December 1964.

Twenty-Five Years Ago December 18, 1986

Don Thomas admitted to complete surprise last Sunday evening when he was announced as Parade Marshall for 1987 Southeastern Washington Frontier Days Parade. Don has served on the fair board and as president of the fair.

Scott Branson reported to the school board on a trip he took recently to the national FFA convention in Kansas City. For Branson, this was the first time he has made the trip since he was a student member of an FFA Chapter. Carrie Stonecipher was awarded the prestigious American Farmer degree this year. Lynn Carpenter was also able to make the trip to the convention.

Fifty Years Ago December 22, 1961

Ray Peacock was honored at lunch Tuesday noon at Ginny's Grill by business men and friends of the community. Mr. Peacock is leaving for several months to visit relatives in Texas and Colorado.

The Coppei 4-H Rangers met at the Dixie School Friday evening and had a Christmas party after the meeting. Boxes of candy were given the leaders, the Roland Masons, the Phil Russell's and the Tom Prices. Glen Baker was presented a one-year football award at Pullman Friday by coach Jim Sutherland. He was one of the 33 players on the WSU squad.

Seventy-Five Years Ago December 25, 1936

A crew of eight PWA men were put to work at the Lewis-Clark Trail Park, east of this city, on Tuesday of this week.

Mrs. W.W. Long is having torn down one of her dwellings on East Third Street predatory to erecting a neat, modern cottage thereon. Park Bishop has the contract.

The Percy Muirhead home won first prize in the Christmas lighting contest. Second prize went to Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Watt and Honorable mention - Mr. and Mrs. Walter Weller, Mrs. Dorothy Singer, Mr. and Mrs. E.I. Wheeler.

One Hundred Years Ago December 24, 1911

Three sleigh loads of Jasper Mountain youths attended the Christmas tree and dance Monday night. They report an exciting time. They returned to the Yeck Bros. place in the wee small hours of the morning where they banqueted on sauerkraut and sausage.

Mr. and Mrs. R.G. Eichelberger were among the Waitsburgers to go to Walla Walla Wednesday to witness the production of "Carmen" and "Lucia" by the Lambert Grand Opera Company.

Miss Maude Sanders has just received a sample line of hair in switches and puffs; also the sanitary human hair rolls, all of which she will sell at reasonable prices.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago December 17, 1886

At last Waitsburg is to have stock yards. The lumber is now on the ground and a forge of carpenters are daily expected to begin the work. This will be a great convenience to our stockmen, and it will somewhat benefit our town.

A poor but wicked young man not a thousand miles from this city, desiring to get married in good shape but without too much expense, a few days ago bought a suit of clothes at the Pioneer Supply Depot on credit, wore them to get married and the next day returned them saying they didn't fit.

Prescott people are quite built up over the certain prospect of a new road to connect them with the Flat. Owing to its dryness there is no possibility of a rival town springing up on the Flat; hence Prescott confidently looks for a little boom in the spring. Hope they may get it. Among those accompanying the surveying party we noticed Mr. C. Sweetser, Mrs. U.S. Grant, Mr. George Sherbondy, Mrs. F.Fountain and Mr. E. King.
