WP State Football Champs The WP Cardinals claimed the 2B 11-man state football title with a 33-7 victory over the Morton/White Pass Timberwolves earlier this month in the Tacoma Dome. The undefeated Cardinals became the second WP team to win a state title this fall after the Tigers won it for soccer.

WP State Soccer Champs

In only its second season as a high school soccer combine, the Waitsburg Prescott Tigers beat the defending state champions in late November and brought home the coveted trophy.

WP Track & Field Team 5th In State

The WP men's track and field team placed fifth in state last June, honoring their schools, Waitsburg and Prescott, with the second-highest placement in recent memory. Students from the Jubilee Youth Ranch made significant contributions.

WP Basketball Teams Are District Champs

The Cardinals celebrated their sweet victories in the district tournament at Whitman College in Walla Walla last February. They made history by being the first teams to win the district title at the same time.

Volleyball Coaches, School District Settle in January

The Waitsburg School Board vacated the suspensions of volleyball coaches Jessie and Katie Buehler, following a lengthy investigation into an harassment, bullying and intimidation complaint.

Deal Is Two-Time District XC Champ

For the second time, Waitsburg- Prescott's Seth Deal is the boys cross country District 9 champion. Deal took first place in November at Clarkston High School with a time of 15:30 in the varsity boy's 3-mile race. An unexpected bout of the flu hit WP's star runner at the state competition in November in Pasco and Deal placed 16th of 140 boys in the 5,000-meter race.

Waitsburg Wrestling Event

In the world of youth wrestling, Waitsburg hit the big time last March as host of a 17-team tournament that attracted close to 2,000 visitors. For five weeks, starting in early March every year, the Washington State Little Guy Wrestling Association holds five large regional tournaments like the one in Waitsburg on a rotating basis. This was the city's first time as a host community, and the impressive turnout took a lot of local residents by surprise.

Jack Smiley Goes To Dayton

The biggest shift at the top of the sports world was from from the resignation of Jack Smiley as Athletic Director for Prescott High School after two decades and his selection as Athletic Director for the Bulldogs.

Thew Is WP's New AD

JP Thew, a former assistant coach for the Cardinals and the Tigers, who wrapped a second tour of Iraq with his National Guard unit from Oregon last summer, became the new sports programs coordinator for WP.

Dayton Is No. 3 In League Football Dayton ended its regular season with a 5-3 record, the first time the team was that successful since 2006.
