The new year brings new restaurants and new faces to Waitsburg: Jennifer, Jordan and Craig French from Midloathian, Texas, will open the Flour Mill Bakery on Main Street. Across the street, Patricia Sanders offers Southern cuisine at the Silver Moon, which she opened on Dec. 14, 2001.

Charges to earnings from the bankruptcy of Enron may be one of the factors in PPL Corporation's cancellation of a proposed 1,100 megawatt gas-fired power plant, which was being planned near Starbuck, a $535 million project.

Twenty-Five Years Ago January 5, 1987

Members of the Cardinal B-squad basketball team are Lynne Carpenter, Trina Katsel, Sheila and Shelli Davis, Kitzie Hazelbaker, Amber McCaw, Shelly Renich, Angie Magill and Celina Aronson.

Army National Guard Private Kenneth M. Wilson, son of James and Sara Wilson of Waitsburg, has completed a traced vehicle course at the U.S. Army Armor School, Fort Knox, Ky.

Fifty Years Ago January 12, 1962

Cindy Leid, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mickey Leid of Huntsville, won a bicycle in the Nebletter coloring contest of the Green Giant Company.

A birthday dinner party was given Sunday at the Will Hawks home, honoring Mr. Hawks, 82 and Mr. R.D. Roberts, 87. The dinner was prepared by Mrs. Otto Nelson assisted by Mrs. Ed Henley.

Despite a rainy cold day the enthusiasm was apparent as 17 youngsters and their horses showed up at the new Community Building to form the nucleus of Waitsburg's riding group for young people last Saturday.

Seventy-Five Years Ago January 15, 1937

Freddie Harris arrived home on Wednesday of last week from Long Beach, Calif. He accompanied his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Harris to the southern city, several weeks ago, but says he got tired of loafing around.

A new road linking Whitman Mission grounds with the Inland Empire Highway, contemplated since early on when a semi-official project was announced, is now assured.

The First National Bank held its annual stockholders meeting Tuesday, no change being made in the board of directors -W.G. Shuham, C.E. Neace, J.E. Butler, Dr. R.E. Butler and E.H. Leonard.

One Hundred Years Ago January 12, 1912

Miss Anna Arnold has received word of her appointment as postmaster at this city to succeed E.R. Henderson who on account of continued ill health recently forwarded his resignation to the Post Office Department.

Mrs. Justina Brown of Prescott has issued cards announcing the marriage of her daughter Hattie Brown to John Flathers. The wedding took place in Walla Walla on Jan. 3.

The County Convention of the Farmer's Union Saturday in Walla Walla, awarded the contract for their supply of grain sacks to A.G. Moore of San Francisco at $62 per thousand, according to a well authenticated report.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago January 7, 1887

Spring Valley has just had a Christmas tree, which was considered a success by all who attended it. All the patrons from this and quite a number from adjoining districts, met early Friday morning to arrange the tree and decorate the room, which represented an appearance of culture and taste that all Germany might compete with.

Dr. N.G. Blalock of Walla Walla, recently purchased from the Northern Pacific R.R. Co. 15,600 acres of land situated near Blalock's Station, Ore. This is the largest individual sale ever made in the Northwest. The doctor will put the property on the market in small tracts.

The Literacy Society in connection with out public school is officered as follows: President, Miss Addie Denney; vice-president, James Mullinix; secretary, Edward Mullmix; treasurer, Miss Maggie Preston; critic, Miss Nellie Towsley; door-keeper, James Houtchens. The society meets on Monday evening of each week.
