Sheriff Ramps Up Patrols

DAYTON - A recent break-in and possible sighting of the elusive squatter who has been breaking into vacant homes in Dayton has spurred the Columbia County Sheriff's Office to step up patrols in the area, Sheriff Walt Hessler said.

The sheriff's department believes at least one transient has been breaking into vacant homes and staying overnight and stealing valuables. The department released a general description of the man last month, who has been sighted by several witnesses, but not closes enough for a police sketch. Authorities describe him as a "tall, white male, between the ages of 25-50."

Hessler said the most recent break-in occurred last Thursday, but he couldn't confirm the burglar was the man they have been looking for. The burglaries may be caused by more than one person, he said.

"We're not even positive that it's the same (guy)," Hessler said. "Just somebody noticed something out of place."

He said the person who reported the break-in may even have been jumping to conclusions. Then, on Friday or Saturday night, Hessler said people on the street in Dayton had reported they saw an individual who fit the description of the man the department is searching for in link to the burglaries.

The department is increasing patrols to hopefully locate the person or persons responsible for the break-ins. Those with any information are urged to call 509-382-2518.
