Dogs Destroy DeSales, 52-28

DAYTON -- The Dayton boy's basketball team took down the DeSales Irish, 52- 28, during senior night last Friday.

Before the game, the six seniors were recognized for their dedication to the team. The game started on a somber note as senior Garett Turner was recognized for wearing jersey number 40 in memory of his fallen cousin and friend.

Dayton scored the first points and struck for 11 points. The boys didn't let De- Sales complete many shots as the team was able to block all but two shots the Irish put up.

At 15.1, senior Kroft Sunderland went to the foul line and shot two-for-two ending the first quarter, 13-4, Bulldogs.

The Irish slowed down hoping to make a comeback and ran the shot clock down attempting to find openings, shooting for two at the buzzer.

"We played some D," head coach Roy Ramirez said.

The Bulldogs snagged the rebound and hit for two with 6:40 remaining in the half.

The Irish hit back for two at 6:20 and senior Colton Bickelhaupt broke away and bolted back down the court for two. DeSales called a timeout at 5:46 with a score of 17-8.

At the half, the score stood at 25-12.

Ramirez said the boys' experience allowed them not to get too comfortable with the lead, so returning from the half they kept their defense strong.

Sunderland shot two-fortwo on the foul line and hit a field goal to start the scoring off. Senior Joey Schlachter scored a field goal for two points, bringing the score to 36-15, as the Bulldogs focused their defense, forcing the shot clock to run out on DeSales.

The Dayton boys found their groove and started hitting threes, breaking their score farther away from the Irish. A shot at the buzzer from Dayton filled the gym with boos and jeers when the referee called no point. The third quarter ended with the score at 45-17.

The fourth quarter started slow for both teams but after a technical foul on the Irish at 6:52, DeSales hit a long field goal for three points.

The Bulldogs shot, but were unable to respond to the points until Sunderland hit a field goal for two at 4:34.

The Irish began to fight back, answering all of the Bulldog's shots but were unable to bridge the gap in scores.

The Bulldogs shot 22 for 54, 38.9 percent, from the floor with a 50 percent free throw accuracy.

"I thought the boys did a great job," Ramirez said. "We take it one team at a time."
