Dayton Softball Team Easily Takes Down Pomeroy

DAYTON - The Dayton softball team slid to an easy win last Wednesday against the Pomeroy Pirates, 23-2, in this single varsity game.

"They struggled a lot with their pitching," said Bulldogs' assistant coach Desirae Jones. " They walked a lot and had wild pitches."

In addition to leading the scoreboard, this easy game allowed Dayton to put in some of its younger players to give them some varsity experience on the field for a couple of innings, Jones said. Her softball players got to play in many different positions that day.

And even though this game hasn't been the team's most challenging, Jones said it definitely wasn't boring. She said the coaches make sure the girls feel good about playing no matter the opponent.

"We try to let the girls have fun no matter what the score is," she said.

A few standouts from the game included Bulldog Samantha Harting who had two hits and served as the team's starting pitcher. McKayla Bickelhaupt was starting catcher for the game and freshman Taylor Frame was able to sub in for Bickelhaupt in the third inning. Jessica Tate took over the catching position in the fifth inning to get her some time behind the plate.

Despite the seemingly unequal matchup between Dayton and Pomeroy in this non-league game, Jones said her Bulldogs still have some work to do. The Bulldogs only had seven hits last Wednesday for those 23 runs.

"It was not an outstanding day," Jones said.

The softball team travels to Colton, Wash., on Saturday, a city located between Pullman and Clarkston, for a 1B game.

Jones said she hopes that her team really steps up to the plate because the Colton team has a reputation for being very skilled.

"They have a very good ball team," Jones said.

This week is the Bulldogs' spring break and some of Jones' players are on vacation. Couple missing players with fewer than normal practices this week and Jones has reason to be a bit concerned about going up against Colton.

"It's going to be a challenging one for sure," Jones said.
