Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
PRESCOTT - The WP Tigers blew by the Riverside Pirates Tuesday afternoon, 8-2.
It was a pretty easy day for the Tigers. The home team held the Pirates to 0 points on the board all the way until the seventh inning.
The Tigers had an awesome day stealing bases and WP pitcher Zach Bartlow was hot throughout and threw many strikeouts. Through the ace pitching and great Tiger offense, it seemed the Pirates couldn't buy a run.
Bartlow stole second base after a single in the third inning. A great hit later that brought home both Bartlow and Justin Zuger and brought the score to 6-0.
Bartlow pitched the whole game and Tucker Alleman was the man behind the plate.
It was a perfect day for a ball game and the Tigers were up to 8-0 in the fifth inning.
The Pirates' coach encouraged his players to step it up going into the seventh inning, and they sure listened to him.
Despite Bartlow's lightning fast strikes he was throwing, some WP errors in the infield and two hits by the Pirates brought in two, making the score 8-2 and getting the Pirates on the board.
"We've got the type of lineup that can put up a lot of runs," said WP head coach Dustin Snedigar after the game. "But I would have liked a complete shutout at the end."
Snedigar said he was proud of Bartlow for pitching so well throughout the whole game and said his team members made some good hits, including a Kyle Dozier RBI.
The leaders for hits were Chris Monzano, who had two hits and a walk, Dozier, who had two hits and one strikeout, Dalton Estes with two hits and walks and a popout, and Bartlow with two popouts and two hits.
Snedigar said his team is trying to work more on moving up some others players into the batting lineup to strengthen ever player. He said this will keep his team from relying on the same three or four strong hitters.
"We're trying to get production through our whole lineup," he said.
Snedigar said he was really proud of the amount of stolen bases and just by the way his team played on Tuesday. He hopes they can keep it up and bring a real challenge in the Dayton-WP doubleheader this Saturday. Some of his players are still working on finding their groove in the game after long football and baseball seasons this school year. Snedigar said this week they will continue to focus on defense and pitching so they're ready to meet the Bulldogs. Snedigar said he knows Dayton has been having a great season and will come ready to play. But, he has faith in his Tigers.
"We're a work in progress," Snedigar said. "As the weather gets better, we get better."
