PRESCOTT -- The WP Tigers Softball team went for the double win in a double hitter against the Dayton Bulldogs on Saturday, finishing ahead 4-3 the first game, and 7-4 the second game.
But the Dogs bounced back on Tuesday win a doubleheader win over Gar-Pal 11-7 and 20-10.
In the first WP game, the Tigers held the Bulldogs at 0 until the sixth inning when the Bulldogs put three up on the board.
Tigers Katie Hofer and Hailey Goenen both had one hit while Bulldogs Sarah Phillips, Nicole Lambert, McKayla Bickelhaupt, Jessica Tate and Lexus Ward all had 1 hit. Samantha Harting had 2 hits.
The Bulldogs ended up with three runs, seven hits and four errors. The Tigers ended the first game with four runs, two hits and one error. Dayton battery was Harting and Bickelhaupt. WP battery was Jennifer Nichols and Dionna Baker.
"Anytime we play Dayton we expect to have a couple of good games," said WP's head coach Angie Potts. "We scored early on Dayton in the first game and they came back in the top of the sixth with three runs. Fortunately it gave us a wakeup call that we needed and the girls played a tough a seventh inning to hang on for the win."
In the second game, Dayton had eight total hits, scoring four with only one error.
WP had seven runs, eight hits and three errors. Bulldog Shelby Smith had three hits, Sarah Phillips had two, and Harting, Bickelhaupt and Rebecca White all had one hit each. The Tigers' Chelsea Brannock and Enedina Fuentes hit one with Baker, Goenen, Hofer all hitting two.
"These were two fairly well-played games," said Dayton's assistant coach Desirae Jones. "We are still coming together as a team. We had some outstanding plays that show what our potential is, we just need to play up to our potential for seven innings in a row. WP stepped up and got the hits with runners on, and we weren't able to do that when we needed to."
Potts was thrilled that her team was able to find motivation and consistency to come out with wins for the day.
"In the second game we scored more consistently and gave up a couple of runs trying to be too aggressive on the bases," Potts said. "At the top of the seventh inning, we had a mental lapse and took our lead for granted. Fortunately we regrouped and pulled out the win."
