DAYTON - The Dayton Bulldogs and other local track and field teams faced wind, hail and rain last Wednesday during a track meet in Dayton, but the Bulldog athletes ran through the conditions and came out with some great times and distances.
The Bulldog men and women placed fifth in the competition on their home turf against Asotin, Garfield- Palouse/Colton, St. John-Endicott/ Lacrosse-Washtucna and Tekoa-Oaksdale-Rosalia.
"We were forced to pause the meet just after the boys 4x100 relay due to lightning," said Dayton assistant coach Dan Nechodom. "The weather did not look promising and the Asotin (team) decided to head home. We resumed the meet after the required half hour."
This explains Asotin's marked absence from the results for the second half of the meet, he said.
Despite the weather, the Bulldogs still had some great finishes.
Dayton's Adam Strohbehn placed second in the 200-meter race, second in the high jump and first in the long jump.
Matthew Warren took fifth in the 800-meter race, ninth in discus and 13th in long jump. Brandon Clark showed his potential as a thrower and placed fifth in the shot put. For his jump events, Clark placed fourth in the high jump and sixth in the long jump.
On the women's team, Courtney Fuller had a shining day. Fuller placed fourth in the 100-meter race, third in the 800-meter race and second in the long jump.
Samura Miller held her own in the middle distances and earned third in the 800-meter race and fifth in the 1,600-meter race. Elise Button was right behind Miller in both of those races, placing fourth and seventh, respectively.
The Lady Dogs show that they have some work to do in the throwing department. Kaitlin Andrews placed seventh in the shot put and sixth in the javelin. Chelsey Martin placed 11th in discus.
