Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
CLARKSTON - The Dayton High School track and field team is improving and head coach Shawn McGee says his athletes are hard at work and ready for the challenge of postleague competition.
The Bulldogs competed in Clarkston last Wednesday in the District 9 meet against DeSales, Asotin, Garfield-Palouse/ Colton, St. John-Endicott/ LaCrosse-Washtucna, WWVA, TOR and WP.
Out of the eight teams in attendance, the Bulldogs placed eighth for both the men's and women's teams. But, this small team had some great times and distances last Wednesday that are making McGee excited to see if his athletes can live up to their potential in subdistricts and beyond.
McGee said his high jumpers, Brandon Clark, Adam Strohbehn and Justin Clark, are performing consistently, McGee said. These athletes may certainly be on the road to districts, he added.
Last Wednesday in Clarkston in the high jump, Brandon Clark placed second, Strohbehn fifth and Justin Clark seventh.
McGee also believes sprinter and jumper Courtney Fuller will qualify for districts in the 100-meter race, 200-meter race and the long jump. She may even go to state for long jump, he said. Last Wednesday, Fuller placed sixth in the 100-meter race and fourth in the long jump.
Other Bulldogs also had some great finishes last Wednesday. Matthew Warren placed 11th in the men's 800-meter race and 19th in the discus. Brandon Clark placed 13th in the discus. Justin Clark placed 14th in the javelin.
For the women, Chelsey Martin placed 18th in the 100-meter race and 17th in the discus.
"This season has been, in my mind, a real success," McGee said. "My athletes are working hard every day, and they keep improving every week."
