MEMORIAL DAY EVENTS
WAITSBURG -- Andrea Wysock, SSG, National Guard Washington State, will be the guest speaker at the Memorial Day Program in Waitsburg at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 28.
Preparation for the weekend starts at 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 26, at the Odd Fellows Cemetery and continues to the city cemetery, when the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and volunteers will place flags and crosses on all 371 veterans' graves in both cemeteries.
On Memorial Day, the American Legion will put the flags out on Main Street at 7 a.m. and will be working with the auxiliary for this annual event.
Participation starts early with the Cub Scouts competition to create the cover of the program. This year Seamus House, 10, won that honor. Dedication of seven new names added to the wall of veterans who have died this past year and are buried in one of the two cemeteries in Waitsburg. Those veterans are: World War II, Harold Drake, Richard K. Harper, Darrell O. Mock, James E. Woods; Vietnam: James Weeks, Neil Rhodelle Witt and Ronald S. Wolfe.
Veterans' families are always welcome to donate their loved ones' casket flags for flying at the wall. Please contact B. A. Keve, ikbakeve@charter.net or call 337-6546 to get your name on the program for this presentation.
All those attending are invited to the annual Potato Bar held at the Elementary Multi-Purpose Room where they can have the opportunity to visit with SSG Andrea Wysock.
RED CROSS HERO AWARDED
WALLA WALLA -- The American Red Cross is pleased to announce a Hometown Hero Jerromy Kerby. Kerby was presented with the Red Cross Hometown Hero Good Samaritan Award at the Blue Mountain chapter office at 175 South Park Street on May 23 at 12:30 p.m.
While on a construction job at a client's home, Kerby witnessed the family's horse escape from its pasture. Before it could be returned, the horse galloped across a covered swimming pool, where it fell through and became entangled at the deep end. Because of Jerromy's quick action and creative thinking, the horse was kept alive until he and the crew could rescue it. The Red Cross applauds this Hometown Hero, who is our Good Samaritan of the year.
