Ten Years Ago June 6, 2002
Thirty- four members of the Waitsburg High School's Class of 2002 will participate in commencement exercise Friday, June 7. Ceremonies will be held in the newly renovated gym at 8 p.m. Tri-valedictorians for 2002 are Jessie Winnett, Hilary Bye-Hogan and Kimberly Bloor. Shannon Brason will be the honor speaker, selected by her class.
Twenty-Five Years Ago June 4, 1987
Jack Otterson, recent Waitsburg High School graduate, was the only member of the Vandal track team to place in the state meet in Wenatchee last weekend. Otterson hurled the javelin 186-7 to get second place in that event. Brian Petit of South Bend took the event with a toss of 188-5. Otterson's dad, who attended the meet, said he led throughout the competition, and the Petit throw came near the end of the event.
Fifty Years Ago June 8, 1962
Gary Gainer of Walla Walla will supervise the Waitsburg swimming pool this summer and is here now painting the pool and waiting for parts to arrive to put the filter system in operation.
Green Giant Cannery is expected to begin processing peas this weekend according to reports from field men. About 200 college students from various parts of the United States have arrived in Waitsburg for cannery work.
Seventy-Five Years Ago June 4, 1937
The Tuxis Club of the Presbyterian Church will serve waffles, hamburgers, ice cream and bacon on the lawn Saturday evening. Proceeds will go to help defray costs of student attending Twinlow Conference.
One Hundred Years Ago June 7, 1912
Memorial Day was appropriately observed in this city, all business houses closing from 9:30 to 10 o'clock during the exercises.
A dance is scheduled for Friday night, June 14, at the Henry Zuger farm at Bolles Junction. The dance will be held in the large new barn and the general public is cordially invited.
B.O. Porter of the Post Office Store has instituted a fishing contest for the season 1912. For the largest trout taken from any streams in Walla Walla or Columbia county with a hook and line, a prize of a handsome $18 bamboo pole with be awarded.
One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago June 10, 1887
The contract for furnishing 25 cords of four foot wood for this school district was last Monday let to Boyer & Morrow, at $4.25 per cord.
Warrants for $61.51 were drawn by the auditor Monday as bounty on scalps of coyotes, gophers, squirrels, rabbits and magpies of which 956 in all were brought in.
Vawter Crawford contemplates leaving soon for The Dalles, Ore. to accept a position in a printing office. Vawter is a splendid young man of exemplary habits.
