SHUBA TRIAL DELAYED
DAYTON - The trial for Joseph Shuba, a Dayton man who is charged with first-degree murder of his longtime wife Suzanne, has been delayed. The trial was to begin at 9 a.m. on July 9 at the Columbia County Courthouse. Last Thursday, Shuba's defense attorney Dale Slack asked Judge William Acey for an extra month to prepare for the trial. Shuba's right to a speedy trial was waived and the new trial date is set for 9 a.m., Monday, Aug. 27 in the courthouse. Acey said the trial could last as many as five days.
INLAND CELLULAR GRAND OPENING
DAYTON -- Inland Cellular, the region's only locally owned and operated wireless communications company, invites the community to join them Friday, June 15 for a Grand Opening Celebration at their new Dayton wireless showroom from 4 to 6 p.m. The celebration will feature food from the Weinhard Cafe, desserts from The Country Cupboard, local wines and beers and lots of great door prizes.
The Dayton store is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with the exception of major holidays.
ANN WEATHERILL CYCLING CLASSIC
WALLA WALLA -- The Wheatland Wheelers Cycling Club is sponsoring the 7th annual Ann Weatherill Cycling Classic on Saturday, June 16. Ann Weatherill was a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay, Garrison Middle School teacher, mother and cyclist who was struck and killed by an oncoming motorist passing other vehicles on a group bike ride with friends on State Highway 124 between Prescott and Waitsburg on Mother's Day in 2004. The proceeds from this event are used by the Blue Mountain Foundation's "Ann Fund" and the Wheatland Wheelers Cycling Club to promote bicycle safety programs in the Walla Walla Valley.
The 100-mile "Century" Ride starts at 7 a.m. followed by the 62-mile "Metric Century" Ride at 8 a.m. and the 30-mile Ride at 9 a.m. The cost of the ride and finish line celebration is $45. Pre-registration is highly encouraged but riders may still register Pioneer Park on the morning of the ride. Riders can register on-line at http://www.active.com. WALLA WALLA -- Walla Walla, Garfield and Asotin Counties - Between May 21 and June 3 extra law enforcement patrolled Walla Walla, Garfield and Asotin County roads at night looking for unbuckled drivers. During the patrols in Walla Walla, Garfield and Asotin Counties, 81 seatbelt tickets were written, in addition to 27 cell phone and texting citations, 16 speeding violations, 10 child passenger safety infractions, one misdemeanor drug arrest and one misdemeanor warrant arrest, as well as 19 uninsured motorists and six suspended/revoked license violations. Ten years ago, during June 2002, the seat belt law changed from a secondary to a primary law, meaning that law enforcement officers could issue a seat belt ticket when there was no other citable traffic infraction. DIVERSITY EVENT ON FATHER'S DAY
WALLA WALLA -- There will be lots of salsa at Pioneer Park on Father's Day, June 17, both on the tacos and on the dance floor. This year the Diversity Coalition will host the inaugural salsa dance competition at the annual Diversity Day Multicultural Arts Festival. The free competition will be open to all comers at 1 p.m. at the gazebo. If you'd rather engage your brain, instead of your feet, the sixth annual Geography Bee will begin at 4:30 p.m., after the Mexican songs. In its 19th year, the free festival will take place in Pioneer Park (Alder & Division streets) in Walla Walla. The fun starts at 11 a.m. with a variety of entertainment, including many favorite acts such as a Scottish bagpiper, Troupe Azure, a Chinese Lion dance and singer Salvador Hernandez.
WALLA WALLA ROCK CAMP
WALLA WALLA - A Rock Camp presented by The Walla Walla Symphony will be held July 30-Aug 3. Please sign up asap as there are limited openings. The Walla Walla Public Schools Music Department and Garrison Middle School will host a one week performance camp designed to give its attendees the experience of producing a Rock 'n Roll concert.
The camp is open to students, ages 12-18, no experience necessary. It will be held at Garrison Middle School, 906 Chase St. from July 30-Aug. 3 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m .; Final Performance Friday, Aug. 3 at 6 p.m.
Cost is FREE, but limited to first 60 campers to sign up. Registration materials are available at the Symphony office (please contact Elizabeth Fleming at elizabeth@wwsymphony.org).
