Acevedo, Leroue Injured At Summer Camp, WP Goes 3-1-1 In Competitions

WAITSBURG - The WP football team attended Central Washington University Football Camp June 16 and 17 in Cheney. Football Camp was a shorter affair this year because the coaching staff had to leave early to coach at the All-State game in Yakima.

The team had a number of kids who could not par- ticipate at camp for various reasons, which happens on occasion when it is an over- night trip like this year. The past five years WP went to the Tri City camp and trav- eled back and forth. The team was missing players as a result of the Salt & Light tour, mission trips, work and illness. But, their absences allowed the younger kids to step up. The WP team competed well at camp and played five teams while it was there. WP went 3-1- 1. WP lost the opener to Kenai, Alaska (Alaska State Champs in 2011) in a short game. WP had a major injury when Devin Acevedo dislocated and broke his ankle all on the same play. It was a sea- son-ending injury and really hurts the team. Acev- edo started for WP on offense last year and caught more than 30 passes. The follow- ing morning Chance Leroue got injured (dislocated elbow) and was lost for the camp. His injury is not as serious and is expected to be ready for fall camp in August.

WP's second game came against Lynden Christian and won it, 3-1. Both Dalton Estes and Sterling Eastman threw touchdown passes. Both played the quarter- back and receiver positions at camp and both will be considered for the quarter- back positions this fall. At this point it is a coin flip as each athlete has different strengths. Both are very athletic and will contribute both on offense and defense.

WP's third and fourth opponents at camp were Columbia Burbank and White Swan in a round-rob- in game. WP beat Columbia Burbank, 2-0, and White Swan, 2-1. The last team WP played was Walla Walla junior varsity and tied them, 1-1. WP had 27 athletes at- tend, including many of the younger athletes. WP had a junior varsity team that also played all week and participated in five games. Scores were not kept as closely in the junior varsity contests. Some WP athletes played for both junior varsity and varsity. WP is looking for- ward to Aug. 15 when the team reports to camp for the fall season.
