Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg Prescott Athletic combine still has coaching positions open for the 2012-13 school year and one position has already been filled with a three- year volunteer.
Stephanie Wooderchak, the athletic director and secondary principal for Waitsburg High School, said last Monday interviews for the position of high school assistant football coach were held last Friday. Mark Hauck, the director of athletics and student activities at Jubilee Youth Ranch, was selected by the WP Combine Interview Committee for this full-time position, she said.
"We are looking forward to working with Coach Hauck in this new position," Wooderchak said.
The position had been left vacant by former Prescott teacher TJ Scott. Scott resigned in July from his position with the Prescott School District and his coaching positions with the WP football, basketball and baseball teams.
Scott left earlier this month to take a new full-time position as athletic director, physical education teacher and coach in Metlakatla, Alaska, near Ketchikan.
Hauck, who has worked at Jubilee for more than six years, said he grew up playing soccer, football, basketball and baseball. In high school, he played these sports at the 2A level in East Wenatchee. However, an injured shoulder meant that he couldn't pursue sports in higher education, he said.
At Jubilee, Hauck was the assistant varsity basketball coach when the school fielded a team in 2006-07. He was also the junior varsity head coach for a basketball team that year.
He has been part of the WP football team for the past three seasons, attending practices and helping out on the sidelines as a volunteer assistant coach. He said applying for the full-time coaching position was a natural turn of events.
"It just made sense for the combine and the strong turnout of Jubilee athletes," Hauck said.
He's looking forward to getting more involved with the team and the other coaches.
"It also solves a lot of supervision issues for us as well," he said.
This fall, Hauck said he hopes to bring a competitive spirit to each practice and lots of energy.
"I look forward to helping kids learn how to compete each and every day," Hauck said.
The combine still has three coaching positions to fill -- two junior high assistant football coaches and one head boys basketball coach. For more information about the coaching positions or to apply, call 509- 337-6351.
