A Trip For Veterans

DAYTON -- There will be a three-day, all expense paid trip to Washington, D. C. for World War II veterans to visit all of the War Memorials to honor all veterans of American Wars. The emphasis now, is on World War II veterans.

The current plans for 2012 are two flights in October and one in November, weather permit- ting. Honor Flight candidates meet in Spokane. The flight is to Baltimore, Maryland with a round trip bus trip the next day to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials and a flight home the following day.

Flights are financed by dona- tions from friends, businesses, service groups, Veterans organi- zation, etc. not by the immediate family of the Veteran. Any busi- ness donation will be recognized the day the flight leaves, for their participation. All donations are tax deductible. Checks should be made to INW Honor Flight, 608 W. 2nd Ave., Spokane, WA 99201.

Becoming a participant is on first come first serve, candidate basis. The exception is that ter- minally ill veterans have priority. The sooner you apply the better chance of an early flight.

There are volunteer help- ers or guardians assigned for each veteran, or a group of 2 or 3. They are with you to help--- provide wheel chair locomotion, do errands etc. and to be sure you are on time for each event. These people pay their own way for the privilege of helping you enjoy the trip. They become real companions.

To become a participant you need to fill out an application that can be done online or by mail. A poster of snap shots taken by Owen Agenbroad, a recent par- ticipant, is on display the Dayton Chamber of Commerce office, 166 East Main Street, Dayton.

A special note to Columbia County World War II veterans: The American Legion Post 42 would like a war time photo of you and also a recent photo that will be used in the Legion fair booth at the Columbia County Fair. If you do not have a recent photo, arrangements can be made to have your photo taken August 30, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the American Legion Hall in Dayton. Please take you photos to the Chamber of Commerce offi ce prior to Monday, September 3, in order to meet the deadline for booth construction.
