Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
Lloyd N. Rainwater Jr. passed away Sunday August 19th in Palm Springs CA. A native son of Dayton, Washington, he was the oldest son, of 5 children, born to Lloyd Rainwater Sr. and Kathryn Newell Rainwater on January 24, 1920. His grandfather, Jacob Rainwater was an early settler in Dayton in 1874, establishing a wheat farm, raising beef cattle and managing their large forested property. The Rainwater Ranch was awarded a Centennial Farm certificate in 1989.
Lloyd attended schools in Dayton and graduated from Eastern State University in 1942. During WWII, he joined the Air Force rising to the rank of Captain. He specialized as a meteorologist and served most of his enlistment in Alaska.
While at Eastern, he met Carol Jones, his life partner for over 68 years, they had one daughter, Nancy Lee. Both he and Carol became teachers, starting out in Waitsburg and eventually moving to Portland, where Lloyd became an elementary school principal, a position he truly enjoyed.
After retirement, he and Carol traveled between their homes in Palm Springs and Portland. Lloyd loved being in Palm Springs as he was an avid golfer. He and Carol traveled extensively, enjoying cruises and trips with his brother Dayle and his wife, Faye.
Lloyd loved to tell stories and always had a joke to share. He told them with a twinkle in his eye, even when they elicited groans from his audience.
Lloyd valued being actively involved in his community. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Dayton and served as Grand Master. He was an active member of the Kiwanis in both Portland and Palm Springs. A faithful member, serving over 50 years with perfect attendance, he became Lieutenant Governor of the Pacific Northwest District.
