Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
DAYTON - Practices are underway and after a weekend romp at Camp Wooten, the Dayton soccer team is preparing for the coming season with a winning attitude and a talented team.
The team has already kicked the season off with a clinic, practices and a trip to Camp Wooten, where the team worked together and, most importantly, started to bond and mesh as a team, head coach DJ Frame said.
There are 25 students signed up for the team this year, nine girls and 16 boys, 19 of which are returning from last season.
"From our seniors down to our freshmen, all of the grades are going to be contributors," Frame said. "It excites me that we will have some longevity."
Practices started last week and captains will be picked this week, Frame said. The leadership is solid in the group, Frame said, because some of the students will be working in leadership courses this winter and many of the returning players bring a strong sense of leadership to the field already.
Frame said captains will be picked from the students who are continuing to work on their leadership skills.
When it comes to talent, Frame said the team is picking up momentum and all of the returning athletes will help propel the team to success.
The growing program gained an assistant coach who Frame said will be important because the coaching staff will need to make some tough decision about which students will start.
Frame said it was important to not only increase the wins but also build the expectation of winning to help the mentality of the team. He said that winning attitude is a big goal for the coaches because building that expectation will help strengthen the team and keep them going into games with an optimistic attitude.
Aside from winning, Frame said he wants to stress academics and sportsmanship on the team.
There are a few more potential late additions to the team who would bring the team up to 27 students and Frame said he was excited at the prospect of an even bigger team even though it would be difficult for the two new athletes to join the now well- bonded team.
Frame said they are growing the team and the staff and are looking forward to a strong season.
The first game is against the state champions, Waitsburg- Prescott on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Prescott.
