Day Bodman, 97, passed away September 4, 2012, at his home at Wheatland Village, 1500 Catherine Street, Walla Walla, Washington. Joseph was born December 26, 1914, in Alsask, Saskatchewan Canada to George Pratt and Luella Clara McCracken Bodman. He graduated from Washington State College in 1938, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering.
On October 9, 1939, he and his teenage sweetheart, Dorothy Jane Grummett, married in Fairbanks, Alaska. He worked as a surveyor for a mining company in Fairbanks, then designed military bases while with the Corps of Engineers in Seattle. During World War II, he enrolled in the US Coast Guard Reserve Port Security in Seattle. After the war, he worked as a consulting engineer in Seattle and Anchorage, Alaska. He also served as engineer and manager for the Bellevue Water District from 1948 to 1951, returning to the Seattle District of the Corps of Engineers in 1951 for design of military bases in Alaska, then transferred to the Corps of Engineers Mediterranean Construction Division in Morocco and Italy. This involved extensive travel to projects in Morocco, Libya, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan and Eritrea.
He returned to the US as Chief Engineer for construction of the Titan Ballistic missile program in Washington State. He served as Chief Engineer for Minuteman construction in Missouri, returning to Walla Walla as Chief Engineer for construction of Little Goose Dam on the Snake River. He retired as Value Engineer from the Walla Walla District Corps of Engineers.
As a professional engineer, he was life member and fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers, life member of B.P.O.E. Lodge #287 of Walla Walla, honorary member of the Walla Walla Country Club, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Walla Walla.
Joe is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Ward Glessner; son and daughter- in-law, George R. and Debbie Bodman; sister, Karolyn Curry; two grandchildren: Kiffen (Ken) Roberts and Dirk (Danielle) Glessner; five great-grandchildren: Annika and Katrina Roberts and Britt, Gabi, and Blake Glessner; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Judith Day; three sisters, Mary, Luella and Alice; and two brothers: John and Oramel Bodman.
The memorial service will be 10 A.M. Monday, September 10, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Albert Gillin will officiate.
