PRESCOTT - The Prescott School District hopes to sell one of its rental properties because no teachers are living in the home this year, according to school officials.
At the district's Aug. 30 meeting, the school board voted unanimous- ly to surplus the home at 104 W. First St. in Prescott.
"This year, the house was vacant," Superin- tendent Dr. Bill Jordan said.
The home was sold to the school district on Nov. 1, 1955, according to the deed on the property. A woman named Maybelle R. Cook had owned to house and sold it for $6,000. The home has four bedrooms and one bathroom, the district's Business Man- ager AJ Jacobson said.
Prescott resident Justin Mayberry said Cook used to own the telephone exchange in Prescott with her mother. The pair had a lit- tle store on the corner across from the Lions Club Hall.
At one point, Jacobson said the district owned five properties it would rent to teach- ers who worked for the district.
"It was a benefit to teachers who want to come and teach here," Jacobson said.
Now, the district has three properties, a rental at 112 F St., a cottage that is a duplex at 202 W. First St. and the sur- plus house at 104 W. First St.
The surplus home was rented to a staff member last year and the rent from it and the other two properties goes into the district's general fund, Jacobson said.
The district soon hopes to determine the value of the home, and then based on the numbers, the school board will determine whether to put it on the mar- ket. Any money gained from the sale will benefi t the district's capital improvement fund to repair district buildings, Jacobson said.
