Banned Book Week Sept. 30 - Oct. 6 This year marks the 30th anniversary of Banned Books Week and the theme is "30 years of Liberating Literature." Banned Books Week is the only national celebration of the freedom to read. It was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than 11,000 books have been challenged since 1982. Art Cawl
11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Numerous downtown venues will be displaying local art for free. Visit all locations for an oppor- tunity to win framed art. Pick up an Art Crawl map at any of the participating venues: The Liberty The- ater Lobby (open from 11-3), Historic Dayton Depot, Wenaha Gallery, Gallery at the Weinhard Hotel, Weinhard Café, Mace Mead Works, Grain House Grill, Village Shop- pes, Palus Museum.
Get your Art Crawl Map stamped at each location. At the final location, fill out a card to be eligible to win local art-related prizes.
Historic Home Tours
1 to 4 p.m.
Four historic homes including the Boldman House Museum and the Historic Dayton Depot (the oldest train depot in the state). Go to Dayton Depot to pay your $10 and receive your map.
Art Demonstration
1 to 4 p.m.
Local artists/artisans demonstrating their talents at the Depot Courtyard.
Art and Wine Event
4 to 5 p.m.
Join us upstairs at the Depot Gallery.
Annual Frenchtown Rendezvous
1 to 5 p.m.
Frenchtown Hall in Lowden as a benefit for the Frenchtown Historic Site. This year's Rendez- vous will feature dinner, wine, dancing, a talk by a noted historian, displays, a silent auction, and a raffle presented by the Frenchtown Historical Foundation. The guest speaker for the event will be John C. Jackson, author of eight books, including The Little War of Des- tiny-The Yakima/Walla Walla Indian War of 1855- 56 focusing on the Battle of Walla Walla and other local events, and Children of the Fur Trade.
Tickets are $25 per per- son. Raffle tickets are $5 or six for $25.
