Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley

PIONEER PORTRAITS

It was a good summer for Waitsburg Lions Club, with several fundraising projects bolstering the club's bank accounts. The income offset some ex- penses the club paid out for maintenance around the softball fields over the summer. The Walla Walla Fair ice project delivered 45,000 pounds of ice over four days of the fair. Gross revenues for ice sales amounted to $6,925, netting the club $2,359 after the concession permit and ice bill were paid. The Softball Bash was full with 26 teams, and unfortu- nately had to turn one team away. The club netted about $5,000, making the softball tournament the second leading money-making project for the club. The tourney's gross income was $9,700. The food left over from the softball bash was donated to the Waitsburg Youth Softball Association, which pro- vided concessions during its tournament, held soon after the Lions' tourney. The Lions also made a $200 contribution toward the treatment of a long-time of- ficial Tom McKeown who is battling cancer. Over the summer, club expenses include $2,100 for grass seed; a $1,900 mower payment, $1,500 in dues and $575 to repair the refrigerator trailer.

Nearly 1,000 locals and visitors enjoyed the usual fine fare at the annual Commercial Club Salmon Barbecue event here. McConnell and Jantz credit the numerous volunteers who donate their time and effort to make this affair function smoothly. Serving the luscious portions of smoked salmon were Ken- neth Jantz, and David McConnell, successors to Er- nest Mikkelson who ran the feed for a good number of years.

The name of Wallowa City, Ore., has been changed to Enterprise.

H.W. Bosworth has a happy combination; he runs a milk and water wagon and thereby makes a good living. His supply is as inexhaustible as the Touchet itself.

White men are now employed exclusively on the Menoken branch of the O.R. & N. Road.

Olympia had the Methodist Conference and Circus the same day. The press of the capitol town doesn't say which event drew more people.
