Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley

Cards Wear Out Against Jags

WAITSBURG - The WP volleyball team fell to WWVA in three sets last Tuesday night in Dayton.

The Knights proved too much for the Cardinals, despite an early rush of energy and a solid second set. The Knights were victorious, 25-17, 25-21, 25-11.

In the first set on Kison Court Tuesday night, the Lady Cards were pumped up and keeping up with the Knights. Serving errors on both sides of the net added points to the opponents' scores. Great spikes from WWVA's Megan Gregg helped the Knights clinch the first win, 17-25.

In the second set, the Lady Cards really kept a handle on the Knights with renewed energy. WP's Krystal Harris got an ace early on in the set and long volleys on both sides of the net provided tons of action for spectators in the stands. A great Samantha Fedderson ace in the middle of the set tied up the score, 8-8. Enendina Fuentes followed up that success with a great kill that later tied the score at 14- 14. The second set remained close with both teams making serving errors until the final score was called with WWVA ahead, 25-21.

The Lady Cards fell apart in set no. 3 and the WP coaches called a timeout early on to try to get their heads back in the game.

The Lady Cards continued to trail the Knights in the third set, the gap growing wider and the Cards seemed to be stuck at 7 and 9 points. Toward the end, Harris jumped up and hit the ball with a ton of strength behind her, but she just couldn't get the ball to where it needed to be. The final score of the third set went to the Knights, 25-11.

For WP aces, Fedderson had two and Harris had 2. For digs, Jennifer Nichols had nine and Fuentes had eight. For kills, Fedderson had seven and Rhiannon Chapman had four. For assists, Harris had eight and Analise Salazar had three.

The Waitsburg-Prescott volleyball team rallied from a 0-1 deficit to claim sets two and three in Waitsburg last Thursday versus DeSales in a battle to get out of the basement in the Southeast 2B volleyball standings.

But the Lady Cardinals squandered a golden opportunity to close the match out in game four, and dropped game five to lose the match to the Irish, 20-25, 25-17, 25-16, 21- 25, 8-15.

The Cardinals battled throughout set one, keeping the score close before finally succumbing by five points. Set two was a different story as WP won by a comfortable eight-point margin. Set three's nine-point differential, put the Cardinals on the verge of winning their first league victory while keeping the Irish mired near the bottom of the Southeast 2B standings.

But it was not to be in the fourth.

The Cards were in a virtual tie up to 20-point mark. From there the Irish closed out the game on a run to win it, 21-25.
